A few weeks ago I purchased a new notebook computer to replace the one I have that is terminally ill. Unfortunately my desktop has seen better days so I am planning on replacing it right after Labor Day weekend. I am in a unique situation or between a rock and a hard place on what to buy. The wife only wants a laptop since she is not interested in using my desktop system. Now I am trying to decide on weather to buy a Notebook or a Desktop.

1) DESKTOP - Takes up room in my limited space to where it is located. I do like a desktop because I can have multiple hard drives, memory card readers and a bunch of other stuff. The package I'm looking at is a Gateway with a 19" LCD monitor. It comes packed with features and this one comes with 1 gb of RAM expandable to 4gb. People who know me know one thing about how I deal with my computer configurations and I ALWAYS max out the RAM.

2) NOTEBOOK - I like the idea that I can take my notebook on vacation with me and have internet access and other features. The laptop I just bought will be the one I would be using. The Notebook is a Toshiba A135-S4527 and has a 1.73gb processor, 1gb of RAM expandable to 2gb, 160gb hard drive, DVD-RW Dual Layer so it basically fits all of my needs in a computer with the exception of a 2nd hard drive and the multimedia card reader. I can buy an external HD and card readers are available but I have yet to see on for a notebook.

SO

If you had your choice to buy a Desktop or a Notebook which would you purchase and why ?

The only advantage I can think of to owning a desktop computer is you can more easily change its hardware (i.e., add memory, network cards, etc.). But desktops take up a lot of space, they're noisier and they put off more heat.

Laptop w/ external USB hard drives...DVD R/W...docking station...

You can run multiple monitors with many late-model docking stations. A work favorite is a Dell Latitude 600 series in combination with two 20" Samsung flat panel displays.

food for thought. Notebooks are not as well shielded as desk tops. The chance for rif FROM the computer is a real issue. (Its been driving me nuts for weeks, think I need a lead lined box for the laptop).
+ the added room for hd,sound cards,etc.. I would vote for the desk top.

You need both apparently but if you can only have one, for the moment, get a desktop for the reason you stated in your own original post. You can always get a laptop later on...

What kind of multimedia card reader are you looking for?

You can get ones off ebay that work through the USB port and will read about any common memory card SD, miniSD, etc.

I use mine with my laptop.
