A behavioral study undertaken by a psychology professor at the University of Pittsburgh has enlisted the assistance of amateur radio operators who are proficient in receiving the radiotelegraphic Morse code to help determine what mental tools and operatives are present that aid in the learning of Morse, including short-term memory function (which is the primary focus of the study).

Cool! I assume you have to do it in person. I'd take part if I could get there.

It's funny that a study like this should come up. I have recently learned how to recognize ICOS flags. That is to say, I can now recognize the flags A~Z, 0~9, and repeat letters. I even have a little program that shows the flag and allows the reader to type the repsonse, and without a random finger twitch to bely my knowledge, I can generally get 500+ in a row before making an error.
Now whether I could recognize them in usage is another matter. I remember stages of learning Morse. First learning the sounds, then the individual letters, but I'm still translating letter sequences into words after 28 years; as opposed to simply intuiting the words like I do when reading print.
It sounds like a fascinationg study. And I'm only 300 miles away or so.

This " study" has been brought up before on ZED ...
Unfortunately, I can't remember when .
Must be a CW memory infusion thing.

I graduated in '74. About a year later, Agora became Newport Music Hall. What it is now, or whether or not it's there, I don't know. But, the Bergs are gone. As a matter of fact, most of such places are gone--thanks to some campus area commission and the prune-faced Hillary wannabe they brought in from Maryland to serve as OSU President. She even banned tailgating before the football games!
Fortunately, her reign of terror is over. Gordon Gee has come back. And he's looking into restoring those cherished traditions. Too late for the Bergs, though.

"Sputter, cough, gag". That's just un-American.
Probably some "professional educator" (read never had a a real job).
I pity the fool who comes to Iowa and tries that. His/Her tenure as president of the U will be short lived and if He/She is lucky the limp will go away.

Same thing we said. #But I guess the scent of the boiling tar, and the sudden disappearance of several flocks of geese gave her the hint that she should move on. #Her initials are K A H. #There are two syllables in the last name, the second of which begins with B. #
Oh, heck!
Her last name is Holbrook. #But for the past few years, the fans and boosters have been pronouncing the middle initial with a primary accent and appending the first syllable of her last name into a single meaningful name. And the second syllable of her last name is pronounced as a separate word. #K. ##### Brook # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

To be followed in 2008 with a study on what mental tool is missing from those who can't learn CW.

I'm surprised that such research is still being done. There was a lot of research on Morse Code learning done during the early 20th century as psychology matured as a science.
Do you have any more info at to what new angle he's looking at?
