Why? What do you want to talk about?
I have the simple solution: SSB (rather than FM) operation. You can break in between syllables, since there's no carrier, no repeater, no controller...

Sometimes, it's a matter of perception, like the length of "a minute" depends on which side of the bathroom door you're on.
A couple years ago, I was chatting with a local on the repeater where our EchoLink resides. I thought I was giving long pauses in between transmissions in case somebody was listening via EchoLink. When we finished our QSO, a friend of mine, who is also one of the local repeater cops, got on and chewed me out for tying up the repeater and not leaving long enough breaks so he could break in. I thought you could measure them with a calendar - he obviously felt differently.
I had a case years ago where we desperately needed to pass a message to someone, and we could only hear one local repeater. Two locals were ragchewing and leaving zero space between transmissions. We tried for the best part of an hour to break in - no dice. We drove until we could hit one of the other local repeaters - never did get a word in edgewise on the first one. So, I can sympathize...

You could wait until the repeater times itself out.
But then you have to be super quick to get a new word in.
I once heard 2 guys having a QSO on a repeater until it timed out.
Then the repeater said (in a computer style voice) "Windbags!"

Perhaps they should all have the "Windbag" options. A little courtesy would go a long way....unfortunately there are always a few selfish individuals which make life a pain for the considerate ones.

FV --- you find the same thing here on the internet.
...folks that intentionally harass, intimidate and agitate / aggravate other post persons on any web site ( not just here at qrz ) .
I come here trying to help others and consistently am attacked by others ( they know who they are ) whose daily happiness is attempting to make my life on the computer miserable .
I often wonder who their next scapegoat would be ( maybe YOU ) if I were to disappear from qrz. I just do not know .

And finally to comment on the topic at hand. Funny you should post this today. I have not been on 2 meters in over a two months. Just this morning I fired up the 2 meter rig to talk to my wife, and I just could not get into the local repeater. These guys timed it out no less then 3 times. I managed to drop my call sign and then everyone ID'd Argggggg ..... I finally resorted to saying "Break" and then got the "Go ahead breaker" ARGGGGG..
Anyhow made contact with my wife and moved off to simplex..

I think it means the equivalent to someone who in ham radio speak is just above the noise level.
Get it? way down in the mud , stuck in the mud !! kind of funny when you think about it.
Way down in the noise, stuck in the noise !! just a bit more colorfull way of saying it not quite as dry as "way down in the noise"
By the way stuck in the mud is not just used on CB. In fact the first time I ever heard that term was over 30 years ago on Ham radio. I think the CB'rs picked it up from us.

Try that on some repeaters and you'll never participate in a conversation.
I often crossband while at work. The repeater has to drop before I'm able to transmitt. Often, while QSOing I'm unable to comment due to the repeater tale never dorpping. My mobile rig has a TOT set for 3 minutes. So the radio will stop crossband repeating after 3 minutes of activitiy and won't begin again until the squelch tail drops. I've missed entire nets because of this.
Worse is being actively involved in a conversation with a few hams and finding that nobody is letting the squelch drop. Then, just to rub it in someone will comment that they havn't heard from you in a while. Someone else will come back that maybe things got busy and you had to turn the radio off. Uuuhhhh, no. I'm still here but havn't been able to get into the machine with it keyed up constantly. Eventually everyone will get tired, sign off and the repeater will go quiet. So you throw out your call over the crossband and get someone asking where you went off to. Where'd I go? I've been here for an hour listening to you fools chat for an hour unable to get in. That's where I've been.

What rig are you using for Cross banding ? I have an IC-2800 actually I have 6 of them. I loved the first one so much that when I heard they where going to discontinue them I ran out and bought 4 more new ones. Then I found a used one for $150 so I have 6. I'm using 3 and have three of them still new in the box. So guess I am set for a few years.. Now I'm glad I bought them. Those things are selling for over $500 on ebay
Anyhow I gave up on cross banding into repeaters a long time ago because of exactly what you described. I still cross band but mostly as a way of extending the simplex range and battery life of the hand helds

we have one like that here too. the nano second the person he is talking to stops, he keys his rig. he has been asked/told many times to not do that and also explained why. but, when he was called on it again by the trustee and replied "why?" in a flippant manner, it was the last straw.
now when he gets on the repeater, there is a "bip, bip cat 300 control,.... control ok" (as the repeater is being re-programmed via the hardline) and about 30 seconds later, it times out.
after a few times, he complained and stated that "it only seems to do it to me and no one else" and was told that "i can hear you on the input full quieting, it must be your radio , perhaps it's over deviated and is passing tones and affecting the controller". he seemed content with that answer.
what a tool!

2Meters sucks because no one wants to use it ! and when people do its just to get a hold of someone like on a cell phone
Quote[/b] (VO1GXG @ Aug. 02 2007,00:26)]2Meters sucks because no one wants to use it ! and when people do its just to get a hold of someone like on a cell phone
We use it all the time. My wife or son will call me on 2 meters to keep me company while I'm out running around doing errands.
I do the same thing, I talk to my wife while she is on the way to the office.
Helps make a boring drive and traffic congestion easier to deal with..
we normally meet on a repeater then go simplex..
I use 2 meters to talk with my son while he is visiting his grand parents at the ranch.
He built a station up at the ranch. When he leaves he pulls the fuses out of the power supply and takes the mic with him
There are a lot of uses for 2 meters FM.. and quite a few of the local repeaters are quite busy during commute times.

I can't say our 2 meters is used like a cell phone - i hadnt noticed that at all.
Our local repeater's are so busy I have to turn the dual bander of when I work HF. It gets annoying. There will be round tables going on 2 meters 440 and HF all at the same time. It drives my wife crazy. Heck I always thought it was the women who could hold three conversations at once

Does the repeater you are working have a courtesy tone? #Most of ours do and that allows a couple seconds of time to throw out a call sign and break into the repeater.
I try to let the repeater drop every so often nonetheless. #I have found that once I start doing it the person I am talking to will do the same.
I call keying up right after the person you are talking to 'playing ping pong'. #There are some folks that just have a habit of doing it. #It is WORSE on simplex because there is no chance of having a courtesy tone.
I swear that some hams could time out the troposphere! #I have actually had to say my call over the top of the person I am talking to in order to get off the air legally. #I can only hold it so long, if you know what I mean! # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
