Dark underbelly of the world's most 'peaceful' countries (http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20070726/cm_csm/yeisler_1)

So - is this article correct or just politically correct? #

Quote[/b] ]Out of 121 countries studied, the United States ranked 96; Israel was 119. But Libya, Cuba, and China – not exactly paragons of human rights – rank 58, 59, and 60.

Quote[/b] ]Only as we leave behind traditions of domination and violence in the human family will we have solid foundations on which to build global peace.I gotta agree with that.

I would think that the definition of peace would include "No fear that the jack booted minions of the law would haul you off in the night". Which would rearrange those rankings somewhat.

Hello.

After reading the actual report, some of the selections make sense.
Wife beating, in the US, a married man can be charged with sexual assault, even if no penetration or physical force was used.
In other countries, wife beating only counts if you break something, "welts and bruses will heal".
So, with no uniform standards, the efforts needed to try and make this equal would be a major undertaking.
Remember, this is a simple rating.

On the whole, I think ours the better definition. Bruises and welts only heal when they are physical scars. The far more serious damage lies deeper than skin and bone.

So, they view "peaceful" #in terms of lower incidences of domestic violence. Perhaps in that category I can understand it, at least we don;t stone our daughters to death if they go out with the wrong guy as a means of bringing "honor" back to the family. But what about "peaceful" in terms of waging wars and constand buildup of military might,

Perhaps some may be surprised to know that Iraq was once a relatively peaceful country when the monster Saddam Hussein was enforcing the law. Very few people caused problems because they knew of the consequences and behaved themselves, and the average Iraqi was happier. Much happier than they are now that religious fanatic terrorists are controlling the streets. Proof of this is that over 3 million Iraqi's have fled the country.

The same situation applied to Jugoslavia when President Tito was the leader of the country. When he died the different states, with christians and moslems, began to churn out their ancient hatreds. Tito didn't allow this and it was a very peaceful country, I know. If they didn't behave they were in trouble with the police.

One has to understand the definition of the meaning of peaceful.
Having lunatics running around with guns and killing students in universities is not a peaceful situation, and there have been many instances of this in the US. Having rioting football team supprters, as we do in Britain where they travel to countries around Europe, smash restaurants and cafe's, and assault foreign supporters, bringing shame to Britain is also not a definition of a peaceful country.

There is no such thing as a peaceful country unless you own your private island and are the only one living there. If another arrives sooner or later there will again be one and the island may have a new owner.

Hum , im on a island..... last known murder i can think of was 2 year ago .

This island is extremely peaceful. kinda spooky actually.I could leave the doors open in my house and leave for a year, come back and everything will be there still!. i haven't locked the front door in a long time . Im saying this because Newfoundland was its own country before 1950 when we joined Canada which was a stupid idea in my mind !
