A family in the Netherlands were launched out of their beds by a cargo ship ramming into their holiday house. The 28-year-old captain went off-course when he fell asleep and was only woken by the sound of the collision.

It's just a little hard to go off course in a canal but he found a way and the Victus found a new pilot. I guess this gives the phrase "getting in Dutch" a whole new meaning.

I know this is about a boat hitting a house but I am reminded of the old highway that went through Frankfort Ky before they build the new by-pass. Frankfort is in a bowl and the only way to get there is down a hill. On the main highway coming into town from the East you drop down a steep incline. Thats bad enough but at the bottom of the hill is a 90 degree turn to the right and just across from the highway is a school. They now have large concrete post up but before that I understand several run-away trucks ran into the school. That will ruin your day. KC0YND

It happened just 10 miles from my home, the canal opens there to an lake but you have to turn from the canal into the lake, him beeing asleep, forgot to take the turn.

As truckdrivers captains of these large ships mostly must make long working days, regular checks are performed by police on the ships to check for alcohol abuse.

If found intoxicated, you'll loose the license...
Commercial ships here in those canals can be 300+ foot long, 30 wide, so the size is quit large, as is the damage when one goes wrong..

Sounds like these canals are pretty deep given the size of the ships and the size of their props.

Glad no one was killed.
