Would be nice for my shack since it's in the basement but my phone doesn't have that little jack that's on the back of "all cell phones". #

That's good for the 1.8G CDMA, but no good for the higher GSM service, like mine http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif My phone does not have the connector either, in fact it has no antenna, external that is.
Dribbling the solder on the junction of those two cans with a 25 watt pencil ! ! ! Hmmm http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif I wonder how long they stuck together after the camera stopped rolling?
Heck, all these years I have been using waveguide for frequencies above 1 Ghz. Now I find that I could have been using coffee cans !
Actually, I do remember coffee cans being used for some ham band equipment, but I sure don't imagine that the antenna that resulted could have had much gain or directional characteristics.
I would love to have someone prove me wrong !

I wonder why he put the antenna connecter in after soldering the cans together? Seems like it would be easier to do it in the opposite order.

Notice the perfect hole he supposedly cut with his pocket pack?
Notice that he failed to mention the length of the vertical element he soldered to the connector.
Notice he didn't ACTUALLY use the device to show that it worked?
Notice he failed to mention where to get the handy-dandy phone to connector adaptor?
Also, check out the site he mentioned and just TRY to find the location of cell towers by using it. All you will get is a list of providers in your area and links to advertisments.

That's a takeoff of the 2.4 GHz Pringles can antenna for WiFi.
I guess it would work, if he would have told us the details. Though we be RF dudes, we can figure it out.
K8MHZ, here is a better wireless tower locator...

Thanks!
But be aware that contrary to what the site says, all cell towers do not need to be registered with the FCC. #Towers under 25 feet do not and towers built for other puposes than cellular service containing cell phone antennas do not either. #Buildings with cellular service repeater antennas mounted directly to the structure do not either. #In my town of Muskegon, MI (50,000 people) only 14 towers are listed on the site.
None of the water towers that have cell antennas are on the site, either.
Thanks anyway, but only about half or less of the actual cell sites are listed there.

They Changed The Can Half Way Through The Video. Right after he soldered the 2 cans together.
I am thinking that he might not have actualy done the soldering... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I think this site shows sites other than cellular as well. I seem to remember public safety stuff on there too.
Unfortunately the site feeds off of tower registration info, so if there's a cell co-locate you won't know it.
Here is another one, though it takes forever to load.

A Google Search will yield the locators of several wirelss and tower companies. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=tower+site+locator&btnG=Search)

I thought I shook like a leaf when soldering. I hope that guy's real job isn't a brain surgeon! Sheesh! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
