I keep getting notices that I have won some lottery, that I never entered, in some foreign land.

All they want is my e-mail address my name and of course my phone number and maybe my mailing address.

I wonder what they would do if I sent them some bogus stuff in reply.

Probably report me for sending them spam I suppose.

I have done that. But I won't use my real e-mail address, because I don't want to bog it down by getting on every spammer's mailing list worldwide. I just create for that purpose a throw-away e-mail account on one of the free web-based sites, like Hotmail or Yahoo.

I've gotten several emails like that in which some scammer will pretend he is from the systems admin department and claim there is a "serious problem" with my account. One such email claimed that my account was hacked and was being used to send huge volumes of spam. Quite conveniently they provided a form where I can put in my current password and username and they would reset my account for me. Yeah right... It was interesting to not that the email was not even from my ISP's domain.

I guess enough people fall for these scams because they continue to send them. All it takes is a few. They send out a few hundred thousand emails and if 0.005% respond they have made out like bandits.

My Son got a call on his cell phone the other day, from where you ask? The great outsource capital of the world. They told him he had paid his taxes so well over the past few years the US Government was going to give him $500.00 per month to reward him. They verified his mailing address and then wanted his bank account number so they could deposit the check. He told them just to mail it to his address.........CLICK......DIAL TONE........

I got one of those calls once, that claimed I had won a prize in some contest I don't ever remember entering. How they got my phone number is anyone's guess. The "operator" stated all I needed to do to claim my "prize" was to provide my credit card number to pay a small shipping charge.

I told the operator I didn't have a credit card.

The next thing I heard? "Click."

Never heard from them again.

I get irritated when a retail clerk asks for my phone number whether I pay cash or by card. Once I told a Best Buy clerk that I just got out of prison and dont have a phone; another Best Buy clerk told me that I had to have a phone..I just laid the merchandise down on the counter and went across the street to Staples..Now I just say" My number is unlisted... and for your information young lady...itrs none of your business...

Go ahead and use yahoo. They're great.

And, I would bet that yahoo wants to know about that email you got, 'uzr. I'm sure they have a place to forward it to so they can investigate who's phishing their accounts.

I would have asked to speak with a manager. I have never heard of a store that requires you to have a telephone in order to make a purchase, especially a cash purchase. Otherwise I'd just go someplace that doesn't require a phone. Except for one day in the future when we discover...THEY ALL REQUIRE A PHONE. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Been busy. Haven't read stuff till now.

I have around 8 of these scam letters. One says that her husband was rich but she can't draw out of the bank because she is suppose to be a refuge, so I have to come over and pretend to be her relative. Another said that a bank there where he is an employee in said there is this 5 million $$$ in there and I would have to pose to be a relative and go over and draw it out. Another said the she is dieing and wants to have someone she can trust to give her money to charities.

I have All kinds of them.

Sometimes you HAVE to give a legit email address to get on a particular site.
If you do that much, or if the site you are on sells their email to spammers, eventually you'll get so much spam that no matter the filter alot will get through.

So you just use an account you dont mind abandoning, using a freebie such as yahoo or hotmail etc.

I do agree, yahoo's email works well, I actually got their "plus" so I can use pop3 etc.

I have two free accounts with Hotmail, one each with Yahoo and MyWay, in addition to my ISP account.

I still use my original Hotmail account, which has been active for almost 10 years, for reflectors, electronic newsletters and almost every other situation in which I am required to give an e-mail address. My second Hotmail account was used for a couple of newsletters that I don't get any more. I don't use the Yahoo account very often, but maintain it. The MyWay account is also for a couple of newsletters.

I used to get loads of banner ads with the Hotmail accounts, but my custom HOSTS file blocks them, and those accounts are almost like using my ISP account.

MyWay.com does not carry banner ads, and I have NEVER received a piece of SPAM to that account.

My second Hotmail account started getting SPAM as soon as I opened it, even before I had ever used it. Their filter takes spells of working very well, and at other times a lot of junk gets through.

I find Yahoo much worse than Hotmail regarding SPAM.

My unused web-based accounts are "disposable" in the sense that I can abandon them any time I so desire. You automatically close out a Hotmail account simply by not entering it for a prescribed length of time.
