World Scout Jamboree on-the-air from England

Worldwide Scouting celebrates 100 years of Scouting with the 21st World Jamboree in England July 27-August 7.

Amateur Radio will be a significant part of the festivities, with participation in several events during the Jamboree. Amateur radio station GB100J will operate around the clock for the duration of the Jamboree. There are plans for a contact with the International Space Station, including an EchoLink relay of the contact.

The Scouting Sunrise Net marks the 100th anniversary with ceremonies around the world at 8 AM local time. This net will start at 19.00 UTC July 31 and continue to 19.00 UTC August 1, and will include GB100S and GB100BI.

The BI station will be located on Brownsea Island, where Lord Baden Powell opened the very first Scout encampment at 8 AM August 1, 1907.

The idea for Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) was formed at a World Jamboree in 1957. GB100J will celebrate JOTA’s 50th birthday on August 4 with special on-the-air activities. This year’s JOTA, always the third full week in October, will be a 50 hour around-the-world Scout happening.

QST Assistant Technical Editor and active Scoutmaster Larry Wolfgang, WR1B, said, “Make plans now to spend some time with a local Scout Troop, Cub Pack or Venture Crew during the time of the Jamboree. Contact a local Scout camp and set up a station to have local Scouts participate in some of the World Jamboree festivities via Amateur Radio.

Talk with Scouts at the Jamboree and other stations around the world. You and the Scouts will have so much fun you will want to do this again and again.”

Hi from Paul PA5UL, one of the operators @ GB100J. We're on the air on all amateur bands on or around the Scouting QRG's, albeit barefoot only pending delivery of our generator. We're on Echolink as well, for now only through the Chelmsford 2m radio link but hopefully quite soon directly on the internet as well as we've just achieved internet access from the shack. On Echolink, look for my callsign PA5UL, as Echolink does not permit use of special callsigns. We'll be on for the next week or so and we hope to QSO as many of you as possible. Scout Camps, Radioscouts and stations with scouts have our special attention. More info can be found on http://gb100j.radio-scouting.org.uk/ which we hope to update soon with our latest news.

Best 73 and YIS,
Paul PA5UL

There is also a Scout event in Tamaracouta, Quebec, Canada. They are using the new JOTA frequencies. See http://home.tiscali.nl/worldscout/Jota/frequencies.htm for the frequencies. I am told that there are several thousand scouts from around the world attending. Their special events callsign is VE2CJCT.

I made a great contact today with the jamboree to GB6RH (Mike) on 14.265 in Sherwood Forest, 20 miles north of Nottingham. He was a 5/9+ into Long Island @ 19:19 UTC. I was a 5/9 there using an Icom IC 718 at 100w with a 20m end fed dipole. Not bad with lousy band conditions. It sounds like they are having a great time.

73's, Peace and Goodness to them and all

I am thrilled that I spoke with GB100S at 01:36Z tonight. I have been trying to find the QSL info because the web site shows a great card that i would love to have in my shack. Can anyone shed some light on the QSL process for the GB100 stations? I only wish I could have been there in person.

Thanks in advance, Rick (Troop 12, Norton, Massachusetts.)
