Well I finally have a HF rig up and running! I’ve spent a few late night hours spinning the dial around mainly on 20m and 40m once in a while on 80m. The first night was great, I made my first DX contact with the Azore Islands, and if I had my log with me I would give you his call. Then I logged W9IMS, the special event station in Indy. I also heard a station in the Czech Republic repeat my call and I exchanged his RS but he dropped out before I could receive mine. All and all it was a very exciting night!

Listen for me on 20m as it would be great to exchange QSL’s with those of you that have helped me out so much in the past few months.

That's great! I'm pretty new at this as well and those first DXs are pretty exciting. I just made my first mobile DX a couple of days ago and I'm still psyched about that.

Keep it up.

Look for some local clubs in your area they might help you get your foot in the door.

Conratulations.

What radio did you wind up getting? What kind of antenna did you put up? Did you build or buy?

Glad that you are finally having fun. Next purchase you need to make: A straight key! That way I can work you on the low ends of the bands.

Heath,

Right now I'm just using the club radio from North Carolina's Contest Club, which is a TS-450S. It's seems to be a great radio but I think it may be spoiling me a little as I still plan on purchasing the 857D for my own rig. As antenna I'm using a wire dipole about 240' long in an inverted U with about 140' horizontal fed with 450ohm ladder line that some of the club members helped me set up, the only band I can not tune is 160m. But other then that it seems to be great. Receiving excellent reports most are 59+ to 57's. I can definitely reach more stations then I can hear so I'm not sure what's going on with that. I have played with the filters a lot so I have them down pretty good and I know that's not the cause. The only thing I can chalk that up to is maybe their antenna may not be radiating as well as mine.

As for the key I still don’t have one but I do have one in mind. I would love to get a J-38 key that may need a little TLC to get back in to full operation. I think that would be a great project as well the reward of having the working knowledge of the key I want to start on. Thanks for all your help!

Howdy neighbor (literally),

I think you're on the right track there Jeremy. I absolutely love my old J-38. If you're serious about getting one, there's a very reputable seller on Ebay who lists them on a regular basis (or that was the case the last time I checked). On the other hand, the Shelby Hamfest is only a month away. You might find something there. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
