Welll, many of these cultures still have what we would consider extreme, barbaric, cruel and severe punishments for things we would hardly even consider "crimes". What will get you at most a mild slap on the hand here in the USA or Europe will get you beheaded or stoned to death if you were living among the Saudi's or the Kurds. Not long ago the Kurds stoned a girl to death simply because they didn't like the guy she was dating.

Makes me wonder how/why we got involved with these people to begin with. Now, because of years of rotten and failed diplomacy some of them want to stone and behead us. We should get the heck away from the middle east and let these cultures battle it out among each other. There is nothing we can do for them. These people are living in the stone age. They are not ready for the 21st century much less western culture and ideals.

It seems to me that moslems have a "thing" about cutting off heads. They have been doing this for centuries to people they don't like. They did this in The Great Siege of Malta in 1565. We read that the words of the Koran are supposed to be peace loving and yet the facts don't bear this out. Are there two versions ? One for those who don't like cutting heads off, and one for those that do. Perhaps it has something to do with Halal chickens, so they like Halal people !

The Japanese belief that the emperor was a god collapsed with the Emperor's own words. There is no corollary with followers of Islam.

The Japanese Emperor God (http://iaia.essortment.com/japaneseemperor_rfac.htm)

Quote[/b] ] At his official surrender to General McArthur on September 26, 1945, Hirohito declared that he was the one to “bear sole responsibility for every political and military decision made and taken by his people in the conduct of war.”

The Emperor declared to his people at this time that the Empror was not divine, that this belief was a myth, fuelled with the sands of time. The reaction was one of shock and disbelief. Many committed suicide, unable to live with this reality.

Bear in mind that Saudi Arabia's crime is very low.

Also, we do not know all the details of the case, but this is telling:

Quote[/b] ] Rizana Nafeek, a 19-year old housemaid from Sri Lanka, is on death row because the baby in her care died while she was bottle-feeding him.

Hmm, don't a lot of people here call for the death penalty?

What about people here calling for suspected terrorists (who haven't even killed anybody, just attempted to) to be shot in a public square?

Maybe if we did this:

Quote[/b] ]In February, four Sri Lankan workers were executed for armed robbery and their headless bodies left on public display in Riyadh, triggering harsh criticism from international rights groups.

there'd be fewer armed robberies?

I do, however, have a problem with this:

Quote[/b] ]In February, four Sri Lankan workers were executed for armed robbery and their headless bodies left on public display in Riyadh, triggering harsh criticism from international rights groups.

And, I've been hearing some on AM talk radio call for this exact same thing, except that it isn't ordinary criminals, it's so called suspected terrorists.

I don't doubt that. Any country that would chop someones head off because the persons baby died while nursing it would probably have a very very low crime rate. I could imagine what the punishment is for a parking ticket. 50 years of continuous and severe torture follwed by a slow painful roasting to death. Compared to other crimes this woman is probably getting off easy having her head chopped off. That's probably considered a light sentence by the Saudi's.

Thank you - I do think we tend to dehumanize Arabs and Muslims in general, the same we did with the Japanese in 1941 and the Spanish in 1898.

I would love to see the Saudis adopt some form of justice that would not appear to be medievil, however. Something that would conform to International standards would be even nicer.

I would certainly not let my daughter work for a Saudi family. If the flow of cheap labor from the rest of the Muslim world were to be greatly reduced or cut off, and the Saudis had to do their own housework, they might gain some small respect for their servants.

IMO the Japanese "dehumanizing" occurred when millions of Chinese, Koreans and others were tortured, raped, and exterminated by the same people that delivered a murderous sneak attack hours before declaring war on us.

However, the Japanese basically lost the religion that was used to justify their violence, and by golly, they've been acting like human beings ever since. Gosh, we even treat them like human beings.

At the same time it is their country and they have the right to have their religion and laws, crazy and barbaric as it may seem to us. They should by no means have to conform to our standards in order to gain our basic respect.

However, I would advise staying away from people who would chop the head of someone because a baby they were nursing died. Or would stone a woman to death because she dated a guy they didn't like. I don;t think it's worthwhile to attempt diplomacy with such people. Basically with people like that you give them a nod, tell them good day, and go about your business.

Now after years of failed messed up diplomacy we've got some of these nuts hating us and wanting to chop our heads. As I said, best to stay away from such people. You live you're life and let them live theirs. Bid them good tidings and turn away. Don't mingle, try to tell them how to live or do business with them.

RJ,

I believe that every citizen of our country has a right to be advised of the charges brought against them, a right to an attorney and fair trail. Our justice system isn't perfect. Some innocent people are jailed and some guilty people go free. And, if you have the money, you can buy your justice and get off on just about anything. But, like it or not, it beats the heck of being stoned to death on a whim just because your "significant other" isn't "approved" or of the same clan as you, called "Honor Killings." It also amazes me that if a woman is raped by a man, ITS THE WOMAN'S FAULT. Never mind investigating the charges #in the hopes of decent chance at having a FAIR trail. It seems that the Islamic community over there automatically faults the woman when most of the time, IT'S THE MALE who commits this heinous acts against the woman.

Our form of justice is far from perfect, true enough. But the justice system in "The House of Saud" and other Islamic countries seems draconian compaired to ours. At least when we put someone to death it's usually by lethal injection and it's relatively painless and humane. It sure beats the heck of being beheaded on live TV or being stoned to death.

Actually lethal injection is far from painless and humane. They use a crappy combination of drugs and chemicals. Why can't they just give the person a large overdose of sedatives or narcotics. Oh I forgot, that would be sending the wrong message that drugs are okay.

Not that we should even have a death sentence but one can't compare the absurd and severe punishments found scattered across the middle east with our system of justice. Ours is far more human, sensible, and superior.

A "shotgun wedding" is when a unmarried southern male gets an unmarried female pregnant. The shotgun is just "insurance" to make that the male does the right thing by marrying the pregnant female and supports the child he helped create. That's the way it's supposed to work, but in my entire 50 years of living here, I have never seen one so, yeah, it's basically legend nowadays.
