View Full Version : How do you know when...

I have wanted to work in radio and television since I was in middle school. Since then I have worked myself into a fairly lucrative government video production job that I hate.

For those of you out there who changed career paths, especially after being in it for years, what was the straw that broke the camel's back?

The first sign is when your demeanor changes immediately upon entering the building where you work. You go from nice guy to a$$**** in seconds, then change back again when you leave.

The second sign is when your doctor starts telling you to take it easy and prescribes something to settle your perpetually irritated stomach.

For me the final straw was when a total incompetent was promoted into being my boss (family connections), and when I complained up the line about the problems he was causing for our department I was told, essentially, "we don't like to be reminded of our mistakes."

There are few things more miserable than having to work for an idiot, especially one with a holier-than-thou attitude.

The final straw is seldom one discrete incident; it's usually the culmination of many distasteful things over a long period of time.

When you are not learning anything new.

There is no position of advancement in sight.

When you are bored at your job.

Everything said here is true. The only things left out are specific to my situation:

1. This "government job" is military. I'm fed up with the chest pounding and testosterone packed power meetings.

2. Inept management -- He's another example of someone who believes "anyone can shoot video".

Using back sight, I retired from work a couple of years ago and realized recently that I hadn't had even a cold or sniffle since then. #Maybe counting how often you are getting ill could be an indicator of when to leave. #If the job is causing you to mentally lower you resistance to normal germs and medical stuff like that, then it is time to take a dose of the "hit the road" pill.

The last straw for me was whe I walked into the office of a newly assigned manager to discuss with him the results of a test I had completed which included writing the final report. #

We discussed the test and the report at length and I thought that we had hit it off pretty good, we had worked together on other projects before his promotion to manager and he seemed to be a pretty decent guy.

He thanked me for the report and I said sure - no problem. #As I was leaving his office he said as an after thought #"Gee Mike, you could learn to kiss ass once in a while".

Well the writing was on the wall, I knew that he and I weren't going to see eye to eye very long if that was his expectation of me. #I waited out two months until the first of the year so I would be fully vested for 3 weeks vacation pay and then I put in my resignation.

It was one of the best things I have ever done in my life, I haven't looked back or regretted it at all.

IN regard to HGH's point. #My health has also improved. I'm no longer breathing nasty, mildewed and plant fumed recycled air which gave me severe sinus blockages nor am I eating the typical fast food on the run lunch.

When you find yourself asking questions like "How do you know when..., It's time to change jobs" it's time.

For me it was getting up and actually going to work.

When I found myself waking up EVERY day and thinking "I don't wanna go to work... ever." that was pretty much it.

Sounds to me like sexual hairya$$ment, Mike... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Kissing a$$ is probably how this guy got the promotion in the first place. #It's like that in most companies, unfortunately.

No not AGR, technician. You should have seen the spasms it caused the active duty guys to have when I tried to explain that program to them when I was overseas last year.

"...you wear a uniform to work... you're paid on a GS pay scale... you have union representation..."

That alone caused two senior enlisted guys to get a nose bleed.

It's time to TRY to change jobs when you are no longer proud to tell people what you do for a living or you envy people with other jobs.

The sad part is many people just don't have that option, mostly because they took the easiest path they could prior to employment.

I have a friend that HATES his job and crabs about it non-stop. #When I suggest that he takes the effort to make a change he comes up with all sorts of excuses why he can't, the most prevalent being that at age 50 he has acquired no skills of value and he feels that other than the job he has he is not employable.

The law of supply and demand is alive and well in the workplace. #Our jobs are like plastic pickle pails. #What we get out of them depends on what we put into them.

normally,

When during your annual review you DO NOT get any kind of pay advance. even 1% says the kinda like you. 0% means time to find a new job.

As for the others. If you hate getting up and dread going to work then yes no matter how much they pay and love you, its time to change jobs.

Oh and if they make you a counter offer... NEVER TAKE IT. They then pw3n you and normally will just terminate you for the Lawls!

AHHHHH makes even more sense now.

Take a look at the USAR AGR system, I know there are USAR Combat Camera units, and they do have AGR slots.

Usually I can tell right away when its time for a new job, it's when they tell me I’m laid off.

I have quit very few jobs in my life. Always seem to get laid off and when things get better they rarely call me back.

A few that have are to late because I have obtained other employment by then.

I’ve only been fired from two jobs in my life.
