My original call sign was KE5HOP. I got a vanity of K5TPC, my initials.
After telling a bunch of hams my original sign, nearly all of them said I should have stayed with that.
So, keep K5TPC, or pay to go back to KE5HOP?
Let me have it...

If all those other hams are so envious of your previous callsign, tell them that since you gave it up in order to get your new vanity callsign, they can apply for your old callsign.

To TPC, do what you want! But I do agree with IU, you should tell them that it'll be available from the FCC in the usual way. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Ditto. Keep TPC.
To many of us, we make the decision to change call signs with only slightly less angst than changing our actual name. Done with much thought.
enjoy it. i do enjoy mine.

Keep your new, shorter call. As you get more involved in operating, you will be glad you did.

Hello.
The original call could be pronounced keyshop.
KE5HOP, but I am good at finding names for callsigns.
The new one, TPC, The Phone Company? I would have to think a while on that one.
That is a decision only you can make.
I have thought about getting my old call (WD2AHD) back again but I got this call before they ran out of 2x1's in my area and I like the call. It is much easier on CW and I have had it for almost 20 years now. I think the only way I would go back if I were to give up on CW and that is not gonna happen.

I would have kept the original.

Never mind what anyone else thinks. Are you happy with the new call?
I got grief over WN3VAW for about 30 years. I even had a highly respected EU DX'er warmly greet me at Dayton one year, only to then berate me with "when are you going to get a grown-up call?"
When the right 1x2 call finally came my way, some of these same guys now crticize me for making the switch.
So... you can't win. Anything you do is wrong, and they'll gladly tell you that.
If you like your initials... keep them. And don't look back.

I was happy with AB2MH until I got more serious with DXing and contesting.
It just wasn't that competitive.
So I was looking for a shorter call and I got N2RJ.
I am happy with it for the most part, except for people who still think N2RJ belongs to "Asaoda family ham radio club"

Thanks everybody.
My inner voice is telling me that I need some twinkies.
I orginally didn't want to keep it, thinking of the HOP would be hooked up with Rabbit, the map guy in Twister. I didn't need another nickname.
Thanks.

You got it. It will cost you a vanity fee to get the old one back! The old one will then be a vanity call! Been there, done that! Forget it, it's done. Either way, it's done. Enjoy

Only problem is now you're a "2" lander in "4" land.
I have no problem with it, but I can see how it will throw some people off.

I'm going to have a similar dilema in a few years. I like K4GUN a lot and have no desire to change it, but there is one little detail that could alter my opinion. My grandmother is getting very old and will probably be a silent key by the time her license renews again. She is KK6S and I would really like to keep that in the family. She earned that back in the 70's and it means a lot to me. She was part of the inspiration for me getting my ticket.
I'll have my Extra class in a few years, and I would love to have a 2x1, especially hers. I am not sure how much I want a 6 here in Virginia and I have a lot of identity already tied up with my current sign. I have a few years to decide, but it gets closer every day.

The only time recently when having a non-area call has been a problem for me was when BS7H was accepting responses by the numbers. I had to sit and listen while my neighbors in 4-land were invited to responded, and by the time he got to 9 he was tired of playing that game, and allowed only three responses. But by then the propagation was nearly gone anyway and there was no chance for him to hear me.
That's the only time I've felt like I gave something up with an out-of-area call. A few have given me a little minor scorn over it, but most don't care. And some of the most experienced ops around this area of transient residency have calls from other areas.
Rick "who lives where hardly anybody is a native" Denney
I dunno, I felt that I must have a "2" land call.
Why? Because I'm a member of the club that does the "2" land bureau (North Jersey DX Assn.) and it just goes down easier on repeaters and looks a lot more uniform in my other club's (RMARC) newsletter when we do stuff.
Interestingly enough, for 9Y, the "4" doesn't signify a region. The "4" signifies the amateur radio service. So 9Y calls are 9Y4 and 9Z4 for ham radio.
Other numbers are used, such as "3" for broadcast, "7" for commercial, and "5" for Government. Ships don't have any numbers, neither do aircraft. For example, a commercial airliner for the national airline (Air Caribbean) is 9Y-TJN.
So just rmember when you're visiting 9Y, it's 9Y4/homecall, not 9Y/homecall...

Well maybe if you were born with a long name or a stupid name like goldenpalace.com you'd want to change it.

There's a lot of that.
For 19 years I've been a 2 lander in 6 land.
In pileups, I can call in as a "2" or as a "6," so it doubles the odds... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
(Only kidding, I really don't do that...I call with the "sixes," so I'm calling along with guys local to me.)

When I bartended in college, someone gave me a nametag that read "HEY YOU".
Guess I'll be keeping K5TPC.
I have to say to the guy that would want to keep his grandmothers call sign, I think I'd do that and like he said to keep it in the family. That would be really cool to pass that down.
"HOP" is a cool communications-related suffix. In packet-switched networks (X.25, IP et al.), a "hop" occurs whenever a packet traverses a router.
With the above said, I understand the doubt that goes through one's mind when changing one's call sign. I am on my second 1x2 vanity call sign, and I applied for both of them twice before making the change (with an application for a 2x2 in between). I liked my 2x3, but absolutely hated my 2x2. IMHO, the A-prefix 2x2s are more trouble than they are worth. One is better off with a recycled 1x3.
I was recently granted an original-issue N-prefix 1x2. I liked my W-prefix 1x2. After all, it was an initials call sign. However, it was not my call sign. It had been held by at least two hams before me (one of whom held it for over sixty years), and I could not deal with that much legacy. I grabbed one of the few remaining never-issued N-prefix 1x2s left in my call area. It was my first choice before discovering that the holder my W-prefix 1x2 was an SK (“RQ” is an acronym for “Repeat reQuest” in world of the flow control, and it also has neat phonetics such as "Radio Quebec" and "Ragtime Quartet"). My only regret at this point is that I have now tied up my old W-prefix 1x2 for two years.
