On Tuesday (7/3), I received an email from my mother, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana, regarding a pamphlet she received, from the state, with information regarding what to do when a pandemic strikes.

From her email:

"The state of Louisiana has been distributing these pamphlets (via US mail, about 4-5 pages, 8x10). It gives descriptions of the definition of a pandemic vs. an epidemic, and talks about how people would need respirators / surgical masks for outdoor tasks. It also tells in detail how important it is to have bottle water, canned goods, etc., stored, with supplies to last 30 days."

The most important information, the reason for mailing these pamphlets at this particular time, is curiously not included. So far, she has emailed family and friends in Tennessee, Arkansa, New Mexico, and Virginia, but no one else reports receiving anything of a similar nature.

I haven't yet seen the actual pamphlet, or even a scanned copy, but I figured it was worth a try to post this here, to see if anyone else had received any similar type of 'official' information / pamphlets along these lines that were being mailed to all state residents.

Any ideas?

I have seen the Pamplet you are talking about. Right now I believe it to keep us informed.
There has been a lot of talk that this may happen in the near future and the belief among the goverment that there will be major disruptions in services such as electric power communications etc.
This could very well happen. May not be this year but in the near future. You can do a google search and find information out if you need to.

It sounds suspiciously like what you should have on-hand in case terrorists perform an airborne gas or biohazard attack. I remember many months ago Mr. Chertoff saying that all families in the U.S. should have those very things in case of an aforementioned attack occurs.

Unfortunately, as the people in Hong Kong found out when SARS made its rounds, is that airborne virii can easily penetrate a gas mask that doesn't have a filter designed to prevent inhalation of anything as small.as a virus. Just hold your breath for 30 days and you'll be fine.

Nothing of the sort here in Michigan.

Since most people in Michigan smoke sickarettes (especially girls and women trying to look attractive) the CDC might consider such a warning to be a waste of paper and postage.

Hello.

About 4 years ago there was a massive effort to train first responders in this.
What is recommended is not a simple mask but SCBA until the bug gets IDed.
What else is known is that a surgical mask is all but ineffective but a gas mask, even a world war 2 model, is somewhat effective.
Masks built for this, like current issue military models, are 100% effective on all but the worst, but if that is the case you are pretty much in a pickle anyway.

Hello.

Notice the not for sale to civillians?
Surgical soap like Phisohex require a script.
Atropine is also a controlled item in the US but in Canada it is issued as part of the field meds kit.
