Do you care about the ARRL Diamond Terrace ?
With only a few more steps to go, the Diamond Terrace at ARRL Headquarters is just about complete. The building has had a new paint job and looks spiffier than ever. The bricks for the Terrace have been laid, creating a pleasing panorama at the entrance to HQ. Soon granite benches will grace the Diamond Terrace, providing a resting place on a lovely summer's afternoon for visitors, friends and staff alike.

i have to admit that, when i read this in the latest arrl letter, it made me wonder what exactly is going on there ... is this a tourist attraction, or merely a mecca for a handful of radio nerds like us?

Unless you are a member of the Diamond Club, I'm not sure you have much room to complain.

Simply a fund-raising mechanism. The terrace was rebuilt to provide a nice outdoor area where folks could eat their lunch in nice weather and idea of the engraved bricks is certainly not novel: it has been used by many, many other organizations and alumni/ae groups for quite some time.
So what's to complain about?

I agree. I'll never go there, and as long as they don't encroach on my back yard, it doesn't bother me. I guess I could send them a diamond shaped adobe brick.

Building a brick bar-b-que pit on my patio. For $50 I'll write your call sign on a brick in Magic Marker and you will live on forever. I call it the Charcoal Terrace...

I'm a life member of ARRL. #I did not contribute to the diamond terrace. #But I do not fault the League for building it nor any member for contributing to it. #This is a popular fundraising method used by many organizations. #If you don't like it, don't participate and it costs you nothing. #It sounds like a nice spot to visit when I finaally get around to visiting the Newington HQ. #
So what's the problem here? #I'm not even sure the original post was a criticism, but it just seemed to have that feel about it.
Steve, I think the phrase "your membership $$$$$ @ wrk" turns it into a critical post ! ! ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

C'mon people.
Do you know how much ham radio jewelry the club would have to sell to match what they've made peddling bricks?

Umm, from what I know, membership dollars were NOT used for this project so what's the beef? This was a special fund raising effort separate from membership bucks.

They have alot of bricks I am sure. They use them to weigh down the petitions they lose or get back from the FCC in a gunny-sack when they toss them into the Winlink fountain of hope.

If they were using their bricks for that purpose, Charlie, they would NOT have many bricks.
Left, that is.

Well, they've been hearing amateurs comment to the effect that the ARRL HQ group is a few bricks short of a full load for some time now...
Is there some way that after they have tossed the brick-weighted gunny sack into the WinLink fountain of hope, they could be zapped and drop down for collection?

If you are a regular member of the ARRL, (just membership and QST), none of your membership dollars went into building this. If you chose to make a contribution then that money went towards building this terrace and towards other projects that league undertakes. I didn't buy a brick but did offer to send them one from one of the many fine brick makers here in South Carolina. They declined my offer.

I think the idea of a seperate fund, not just 'using dues money', for a construction project is an excellent idea, and shows fiscal responsibility, along with an appreciation of the role of 'image'. Especially for visiting non-hams, who may be influential.
Ever go to a hamfest?
I personaly think a fundraiser for clothes, soap, and a dust rag, for the hams and the gear, would be a nice idea.....
As for buying bricks, it is a standard, and I think #cool idea, for raising volunteer funds.
I am building a patio. any QRZ ham, or NON ham, can send in a simple, one time donation of $1000, and I will have a brick engraved, maybe.

This is not a bad approach to raising funds, and it will add some interest to the entrance.
The only thing I'm wondering - is who's brick will be the first one to get pigeon droppings on it? Wanna start a betting pool anyway?

Nope, contributions come from both sectors for projects like this in any organization. However, to assume, like some in this thread, that membership dues are used for projects like this, is just wrong.

Some people are funny.
They had a seperate fundraiser, not using member dues, and people complain.
If they used member dollars, holy hell would be raised in this forum.
How can they win?
For the record, it was a seperate fundraising effort. People made donations and had a brick with their call sign or something similar on it.
The donation was for a minimum of $250.00 per brick.
Hence, how it was funded.
I know, our club made such a donation and put a note for our silent keys from our club.
It was a seperate fund.
It makes the place look a bit better.
Our club has benefited from the league on many occasions.
We felt it was a good gesture to make the donation.

Charlie, that design of yours looks more like an Omega (over the grill) than a diamond. Viva la resistance! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Instead of a terrace or barbeque, think I will construct my own "Great Memorial Wall of Boat Anchors". If you wish to contribute, please ship one or more of your favorite Boat Anchors (1975 or earlier) freight-prepaid to my address. I will personally emblazon your callsign upon it (but not where it might actually be visible when on display). Fully restored and operating rigs are prefferred, but all are welcome. I promise to publish a photo of the completed "Great Memorial Wall of Boat Anchors" right here on The Zed.
After that? Maybe the "Great Memorial Look-To-The-Skies Backyard Full of Towers".
Hey, I kinda like where all this is going.
It's a good idea to make donations to the ARRL. Be sure to restrict use of the money to a particular project to ensure your dollars are spent as intended. The ARRL has many worthwhile projects that could be better funded if they did not have to compete with general funds expenditures. And if you're so inclined, my spoof of the terrace should not disuade anyone from giving. It's all in fun.

Charlie, this picture THOROUGHLY disgusts me for two reasons:
1) Your 'party animal' isn't attired with a signature "Dale Earnhart" hat, and EVERYONE from the south knows that is de riguer headwear for such an event;
2) Ditto the refreshment in the character's hand. Budweiser or nothing, thank you.
