View Full Version : Finally, a new amateur radio
http://www.rangerusa.com/rci-63ffc2.html
Single band?
Not much use to me.
Looks like the CB type will latch on to this one to bootleg on 10 meters.

Just Great!
Another C.B. radio made for 10 meters.
Has echo & talk back? Just what we need on our ham bands.
Like I have said so many times, Thanks to the F.C.C. and A.R.R.L. C.B. and Ham radio will be the same someday and that day is coming fast.
It`s too bad.

novice and tec ops
can only run ssb or cw on ten meters

antenna impedance 50 W
w6gq will need one for his four wheel drive

Anyone tell me what "talk back" is? Many years ago working in the phone company, it was the term used to indicate you could hear your own voice in the earpiece. Does this mean in this 10 meter CB that you can hear your own voice in the speaker?
Thanks

Well, at least you'll never get lonely. I kinda thought that was what it meant. You know, most of those guys on CB would be happy with that, without even an antenna, 'cuz all they do is talk. They don't listen. "I got the key down." This talk back thingie should convince them they are being heard, even if they aren't. Good idea. Just work yourself. If you stand pretty far back from the radidio you can call it DX.
I agree, this is gonna save ham radio. We gonna be modididulating and radidioing and talking back and echoing and getting the ears on and pedal to the metal and all kinds of good things. Yup. Thet thar ole new ham radidio do be upon us. We is saved, we is.
Gotta practice getting my fake southern accent back. I wonder if I can do that on CW.

Leave to Ranger. If they can not sell to a Ham they make it available to CB.
If a radio has a channellized display that reads 1 - 40, you can be pretty sure the FCC will consider it an illegal non-certified CB.

Can we start a pool to see which shop is the first to get busted by the FCC for importing or selling these fine little gems?
It must be a "dual-band" and those are categorically illegal to sell or import for sale, or even advertise. U.S. dealers can't even touch the things legally.
The FCC can't touch the manufacturer because the radios are made overseas, and may even be legal in other countries.

I agree it's a hunk of sh*t, but they have been around for a long time, maybe under a different brand. The dead give away is no cw or ssb. The echo and roger beep fit the bill as well. These radios have been around, and been in use for years, nothing new due to a rule change.

You're not missing anything, the RADIO is!
Calling that an "Amateur" Radio is akin to calling a Yugo a "luxury sedan."

So do those still pissing and moaning about the rule change really think that as of February 2007 freebanders and 10 meter pirates just appeared? Before, they had to make their own radios I guess, because this new radio is obviously the result of the recent rule change?http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Before that, Ranger and the like never had these types of radios?? That is simply silly. This has been going on for years, radios like this have been around for years. IT IS NOTHING NEW!!!!!
Meanwhile, since I joined SKCC about a month ago, there have been almost 100 new members, many of them new CW ops I'm sure. Ham radio is not going down the tubes, it's gonna be OK.

Seems to me nobody at RangerUSA has enough intelligence to read... especially their lawyers.
It's supposed to be illegal to even advertise a dual-band radio for sale in the U.S. If they are the U.S. distributor, they should be busted.
Hope the FCC's OET gets their hands on one real soon now. (And the list just keeps growing, and growing, and growing...)
Then there's false advertising (as Glen points out.)

I called Ranger and asked for some answers. #Before I go on here is their contact information:
Ranger Communications
401 W 35th St
National City, CA 91950
(619) 426-6440
All I got from the tech there, 'Vic', was that 'talk back' was a monitor so you could hear yourself. #He said that is was useful when trying different microphones. #When I mentioned that things like echos and roger beeps were probably illegal on 10 meters he started playing dumb and said that he only fixed the radios he did not design them. #He asked a supervisor to speak with me and the supervisor would not do so.
It may not be a bad idea to make some calls to Ranger and let whoever answers the phone know that they are under the scrutiny of amateur radio operators and we don't really apprecate them selling stuff like this to hams, especially new hams.
I think we should also be sending our concerns about the company to fccham@fcc.gov
Thank you for your support.

k8mhz, I really don't think they are marketing this radio to hams. It's like the guys at the flea market selling bongs. They are going to call them water pipes for tobacco use only, but knowing full well they are trying to get stoners to buy them for smoking pot. Same here, they have to call it that so they don't advertize a 200 watt CB inteded to be used illegally by freebanders who have no license to be on 10 meters.

It doesn't say anything about how 28.505 equals channel 40 either. Or maybe I just don't understand CB technology--due to mental brass poisoning, or something.
W5HTW

A good many of the people who are on 28.085 have no idea what frequency they are on, or that it is a ham band. To them, it is simply a 'channel number' they select as "extry channels.' Many of them think they have a right to be there, since the radio they bought includes it. Some have never even heard of ham radio, though that is very few. They really think this is another freeband or CB channel and it is theirs to use.
The proliferation of these types of radios will further that concept. If you actually listen there, when the band is open, you will find them complaining about interference to their channels. I know, for I have made them do exactly that, using CW.
Some so called freeband radios don't show a frequency in the display at all. It would be just something like "Channel 43B" or whatever. They have no idea where they are. EVen the ones that do show a frequency display often are misunderstood by the user, who really doesn't know what those numbers mean. Nor does he care.
We can complain about this radio, and similar types, to the FCC, as one avenue. The other is anytime the band is usable, we can be on it. I monitor 28.085 when I have nothing else to do, and if I hear AM signals, I call CQ on CW for a while. But I can't monitor it and be on the air on 20 meters or 17, so I am not able to do a lot of that. But if we get a few hundred hams around the country who can, we can make at least some small dent in this.
