It's manslaughter because there was no intent to kill the kid...at least that's the story for the moment.

The only good that could come out of this is she may now be out of the gene pool. This is proof positive common sense is not something that can be learned in school.
I believe there is a special place set aside in Hell for anyone who harms a child.

It is absolutely gut-wrenching to read this stuff. It makes me want to hug my kids a little tighter tonight. Funny, we make you take a test to pass school, get a driver's license, get a ham ticket, and God knows how many other things, but there is NO test for anyone who wants to parent, which in my mind is the absolute pinnacle of responsibility and importance in the world. Funny, the most important job in the world often goes to people with little or no training.
It makes me wonder if states have emergency help-lines for parents who just need some advice. It would be a great idea to have a registered nurse, or an experienced care-giver that one could call for advice on some of this stuff. To the single Mom who is quite young, and probably quite alone, this would be, I think, a very good resource. Of course, it would be one more "pork" social program, but one that I think would be worth every cent even if it only saved one life. Perhaps some states have something like that in place now. If so, I don't see it marketed well. Just a thought.

Hello.
I have no idea of what to think.
Why would a pacifer that is taped in place cause the child to die?
Now, what will it take to solve the problem?
Can we come up with something that will meet all of the requirements?
Perhaps if the pacifer were to be held on a cord, suspended by the crib, close enough for the infant to get to but out of harms way.
Some people see this as the idiots solution, I see the world filled with idiots.
The next question, did the infant die from the pacifer being taped to the child or did the act of taping the child cause injury.
The other option, something else happened and this was the aftermath.
What if the infant was crying due to prior injury?
Remember, we are not dealing with Ms. Molecular Genius here.
We are dealing with a female who thinks that the oil warning light on a car is a suggestion.
Kids do not come with warning lights, just noise makers.
And, no, the planet is fine, this may be natures way of controlling breeding.
More than once I have seen the morons of the human race with children and said "OMG! they are breeding!".

How many idiots had to die before Einstein was possible? Start with the earliest mammals. Is there a paleomathematician in the crowd?

Okay, seriously, Issac Asimov estimated that about 30 Billion Human Being have lived since Man began walking the Earth. That was 20 years ago, so add about 2 Billion for those who have died and been born since then. But Einstein is only one of many. There's DaVinci, Newton, Aristotle, Tesla, Morse, Archimedes, Edison, Michaelangelo, Clark (,Arthur C.), Gallileo, Herschel, Sagan, and more.
Then there's Gwyneth Jones. She invented the concept of the modern Fembot.

"The only thing I can think of is I taped the pacifier to keep it from falling out. I didn't know it would hurt him, or I wouldn't have done that,"
She doesn't even know why she taped the pacifier in the kid's mouth? What kind of drugs is she on?
My guess as to the cause of death would be suffocation. If the pacifier was taped in and the nose became clogged with mucus (tiny nostrils) then the baby would have no way to breath if it could not spit the pacifier out.

Could also be aspiration by fluids sucked into the lungs.
Either way an example of parenting at it's finest.
The sad thing is that you only hear about a small fraction of the stupidity that occurs everyday in the world.

It seems like there are a lot of people out there now who have a kid for the sake of having a kid.
And thats about it.
I haven't had any yet, and won't till I feel ready to do so. If I never feel ready (physically as well as financially) then I simply won't have any. Its not a priority to me.
But to many people, its some kind of status thing or peer pressure to have a kid. I won't have a kid for those reasons. Its part of the reason why I have a divorce on my record. Other reasons were much more sticking than the kid thing, but it was one of the things I would not bend on. She wanted a kid just because her sister was having one. I wasn't about to take our income which was pretty thin as it was and try to extend it to satisfy her need to have something because her sister was.
I see it a lot too in my current wifes friends-they have kids, but anytime they can pawn them off on a grandparent or someone else so they can go 'party' they will. My suggestion is to do all of that first-'party' yourself out, then when you're ready to sit at home, then have the child. They have the kid and then resent it because it interferes with their social life. If you want a social life, don't have a kid.
Sounds to me like this parent had something more pressing to do-maybe something on TV or whatever-and wanted to keep said kid quiet, so she did this.
I'd honestly like to know why this kid was had-and why she felt the need to do this, really. Not the news or the made up story, but the truth. You don't do this unless you have something pressing going on, or something like that. I'd really wonder about the thought process, or lack thereof.

You make an excellent point. My wife had twins 7 years ago. While she had one baby before, twins took on a whole new definition of how to parent. Thank God we had my Mother-In-Law 7 miles down the road to come help out, give advice, and just be there when my wife was having days where she was just exhausted. In that way, we had a lot of advantages that others don't have. My wife also stayed home with ours for couple years, but when it came time to work, my Mother-In-Law became our twins' nanny and we payed her like we would pay day-care, and it made ALL of the difference in the world.
It's too bad that we would need a state agency to do what a family used to and in some cases, still does. However, as you noted, the world is vastly different now, and at least in that way, none the better.

Pop out a kid here, and the single mother instantly gets:
Free rent.
Free food.
Cash payments for several years.
For many its easier than working hard to get all that. Then they take under the table jobs cleaning homes and such, or just sue for child support, for some fun money..... all the while neglecting thier kids.

In most cases around here, unless the father is 'unknown' or somehow gets out of it, they wind up paying for it.
And usually if they indicate unknown, they encourage them to disclose http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hello.
I remember being in East Germany and taking the IQ test, I was just a touch above average I was told.
I was brought into the US and given the Stanford test, I scored an even 140.
In my classes in Saudi Arabia, where they try to pair everybody up, I was average.
In San Antonio Texas, at Alamo Heights high, I was a genius.
It is not that I am smarter than the rest.
It is the schooling.
Nobody cares.
The students are more worried about what happens after school.
And, what is it with this homework?
If the schools would cover the material in class there would be no need for homework.
In both Saudi Arabia and East Germany there is no time for homework, training goes on at night.
In the case of East Germany there is the labor assignment and military training.
In the case of Saudi Arabia there is Hafiz and Imam training, as well as work and military training.
The one thing that was very common in both cultures, the military training, almost identical, both being based on Roman and Spartan military.
My first board game has a bunch of little stop-sign shaped pieces with military symbols.
I later got one from Saudi, almost the same size and a few more pieces, but the same game.
This is based on Nepolians army.
In both cultures I would take a weapon "home".
Would you trust a US student with a full-auto carbine or rifle?
At one time, as part of ROTC, "kids" did just that.

That reminds me of a silly tale, probably made up, where Roosevelt was making lend-lease materials available for Stalin and asked the old dictator if there was any supplies that Russian troops needed that hadn't been considered yet. Probably in an attempt to impress Roosevelt, Stalin said that his virile troops needed as many condoms as America could produce. Roosevelt promised that the Russian troops would get condoms.
