View Full Version : LOOK UP^ The ISS & Space Shuttle Visible Tonite
Quote[/b] ]Skywatchers in the contiguous United States and southern Canada will see a treat—weather permitting—when NASA’s International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Atlantis streak across the sky on Wednesday evening (6-20-07).
To find when the pair of orbiting objects will be racing across your local sky, go to NASA SkyWatch (http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/), NASA’s J-PASS (http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/JPass/), or Heaven’s Above (http://www.heavens-above.com/).
Look for the Big Dipper in the northwest sky to get an approximate location where the pair will begin their travels across your local sky.
Traveling at about 18,000 miles per hour, they will be seen for only a few minutes in the night sky

It ought to be even brighter than when I saw it go over a few years ago, because they just added some more exterior structure for solar panels.
It looked like an aircraft light, approaching relatively slowly, then zipping a fair angle overhead, then receding slowly to the horizon. It will actually be difficult to be sure you're not looking at a plane, so check the predictions and watch the time.

WDR not really .. aircraft strobe lights flash ... the ISS does not.. plus this is a reflection of the sunlight.

Yea, I saw that Ryan.
I would guess the second smaller one was the shuttle.
That is always cool. First time I've seen both of them at the same time.

I think I might be otherwise occupied for tonight's sighting here [9:24pm] - I'm at work at the moment - but perhaps tomorrow night. Around 9:45pm for one minute, according to the NASA link...
It appears that the shuttle will be visible too. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'll be watching.
Sightings also possible on Friday. TWICE! 8:31pm and 10:05pm. Well, I'll be at home then, AND I have binoculars. I should set an appointment reminder on my cell phone for those.

We just had an AWESOME high elevation pass (almost directly overhead) 0142 UTC, June 22
ISS followed by STS-117. The shuttle was a little farther behind the space station than it was last night.
Very, Very, cool.
I also snared some walking neighbors in my geek trap. They said it never occurred to them that they would be able to see those craft from earth.
Now they are probably convinced my antennas are aimed at extraterrestrial discovery. As it was only a hunch before. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
After all, nothing say's talk to me neighbor like walking around the backyard with headphones on, holding a handheld Yagi working satellites. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
(I wasn't doing that tonight though)
After craning my neck looking nearly straight up for a few minutes, I gave up trying to spot the things...then The Wifoid suggested that I go outside, first.

This Field Day on Saturday evening in San Antonio, we'll have a 4 minute sighting opportunity for both crafts. I suspect that may change for the shuttle.

If the shuttle is still up on Saturday you should be praying not only for the lives of the shuttle crew, but for the continuation of the human flight part of the program.
No Joke

almost right on time, 2144.35 PST by my count, very bright, visible
for about 40 seconds, not bad for being in town, DM15, its interesting to note the degree seperation from nearby towns in the surrounding area,, does anyone know how the degrees are factored in? Im ignorant of that fact, thanks

You should look up Iridium Flares on google
Now those are really cool to see.

Ah seen 'em! #Ah done SEEN 'em! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Right around 9:45pm, generally out of the west and moving toward the east, first the ISS, followed shortly by Atlantis. #[Or was it the other way around?] #I was in fact outside and waiting and watching. #So were my brother and my friend Jim KI6EQA. #The parking lot we were in was definitely not a dark-sky site, but it was fairly easy to spot the ISS as it approached. #It appeared like a star or a very distant airplane at first, but then its path became obvious and easy to follow as it rose above the horizon. #It passed almost directly overhead, and while we were shielding our eyes from the lights in the parking lot, I also got a chance to inform a few bystanders that what we were looking at, "that light right up there, see it?" was the International Space Station. #"And now it'll move out of sunlight and into shadow and yep, there it goes."
Then, looking back toward the direction the ISS came from, we spotted the start of the shuttle's pass. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #Instant replay!
Yep... #It was coolness.
