http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Has anyone tried the CQ100 so called, "Amateur Radio?"

#My opinion is, it is not real ham radio.

#You can talk to anyone in the whole wide world that has
#the same program installed on their computer.. big deal!

Voice chat with a user interface that looks like a radio. Nothing more. Just like Skype except for the picture of the radio.

If you are doing it over the internet, it is not dating or radio.

No RF == not radio.

When I want to talk PC to PC I use skype. When I want to talk PC to radio I use echolink.

When I want to talk radio to internet to radio, I use either echolink or IRLP.

Nice programming job but really nothing to do with amateur radio.

Other than the ridiculous requirement of having an amateur radio license.

Sounds like another 'voice chat' type of program. Nothing wrong with it but it's not exactly amateur radio. IRLP and Echolink ,for the most part, at least have RF at the end point, a kind of remote link. While I would agree that even that is still not 'traditional' radio it at least it involves RF, though there are some that use Echolink for computer to computer chat, most people use it to link to a transmitter. It really is nothing more than remote linking on a global level and is not in any way the same as RF only communications in usage or purpose.
Sounds like this is just another way for amateurs to 'network' with one another. I guess that is OK but I wouldn't say it's radio by any stretch of the imagination.

Well suposedly they intend to add remote base capabilities to it. #That is if they get enough paid supscriptions. #That's the real silly part. #After so many days free trial, there is an annual feel to keep using it.

A) You have to have an amateur license to use it

B) You have to pay to use it

What part of this sounds stupid? Oh, right, both parts.

Sure, you don't have to deal with those pesky antennas, balky final tuning or any of that... and you're always 59... with no drift at all.

Sorry, I can't get excited about it.

At least yahoo messenger supports webcams http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Course, if you have a bad ISP, you may experience QRM also-you won't connect to anyone!

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif # #However: #It is a good program for newcomers to learn
#new skills without actuallly getting on the air. #I can see
#where this might come in handy for learning PSK and some
#other modes.. even CW, # 90 days free should be enough practice. #

I use digipan (another free program) for PSK
#with it and it works very well. #

I disagree.

There's no fading, interference, contests or anything else that's on the "real" radio to deal with...

It's no good for practice. All it's good for is for people who want to pretend they're on amateur radio.
