The ICOM 718 is a low end rig that works superbly for me. However, it does not have a feature for me to monitor my modulation, like more expensive radios. Is there an internal modification that can be made, or an external speaker/headset that will work? I know on some model radios a 150 to 200 ohm resistor bridging the external speaker and PA jacks internally used to work. But I'm not familiar with ICOM and I don't want to hurt the rig. I'm open to all serious suggestions.

You might want to find a block diagram of the radio. I think you will find that the Monitor function takes place in the transmit IF stages ... not audio stages, thus ... what you want to do .. will not work.

With most ham transmitters, if you use the stock microphone and adjust the various controls the way the operating manual directs, your transmitted audio will be just fine. #Are you looking for something like a "talkback" feature?

If you just have to use a different microphone, keep things adjusted properly and maybe get an on-the-air check with someone whose judgment (ear) you can trust.

Watch the ALC, and keep the processor turned off.

Yes, gentlemen, "talkback" is what I was attempting. The stock HM-36 hand mic works great with compression, but I bought a HEIL ICM and I'm told sounds better. I can't work compression with it, because it gets "hot" after a while. I have the ALC adjusted as the manual suggests. I just wanted to hear it for myself but, as you say, I have relied on some trusted amateur buddies of mine to give me accurate reports. Thanks

You could temporarily swap stations with someone whose voice characteristics you can recognize. Have him operate your station while you operate his. Let him try different microphones and settings while you listen and see what differences you note. Be sure you're far enough away from one another so you're not swamping the receivers' front ends.

I've reduced power to the minimum on a transceiver and connected it to a dummy load, then disconnected the antenna from a receiver and cut the RF gain way back, and listened to that receiver through headphones while transmitting. Not elegant, but it works...except it's really hard to talk and listen at the same time!

Record your audio from another radio or scanner plugged into your PCs sound card.

The play them back later and compare.

Just make sure you identify which mic it is you're using during the recording.
