Searching for IC-T81A on Google will get you plenty of reviews. It appears to be discontinued (at least none of the major internet stores I looked at offer it). The big "pro" for this over other HTs would be the 1.2 GHz mode, but I don't know how much use you'd get out of it.

Knowing now what I didn't know then, I would not buy the thing again. The "toggle" is far to small for me I can never get it to go into program mod while on the road and wanting to put in a new freq. The programing software and cable are easy to use but you need a computer to hook into so unless you travel with a laptop, be sure to have all you programing done before you leave home.

The T81A is a great little radio. It is well made and for me has been the most reliable HT I have ever owned or used. The bettery pack that came with it will last a very long time even with alot of transmit time on high power. The duck on top is better than most and sturdy.
# I would agree that 220 would have been a better choise than 1.2 GHz as the 4th band.
# I have used mine as a basic carry about HT. I have also used it with another T81A and an Arrow antenna to work
UO-14. Currently I am using it in the car with a dual band (2m/70cm) amp. as a mobile rig with great success.
# If asked if I would part with my T81A???...............NO way!! First off It works well and it was my YL that pionted me in that direction after I saw and used hers. I still thank her.
