On the kid next door. Just finishing up transfering his files to the revitalized computer. Man is it faster now.
Put in a new 200 gig secondary drive and told him his 'C' drive for for operating system items only. Put his pics and music on 'D'.
Also order 2 gig of memory for him for the Dell ( 2 one gig sticks ) from Crucial. Should come in next week.
Now going to load iTunes and an older version of JASC Photo Shop for him instead of that lousy Kodak stuff.
Also, he had - READ HAD - Norton 360 on the computer which caused all the problems to begin with. Told him to just get McAfee or Norton Anti-Virus and forget about those security suites. They reall bog down the computer something awful.

Try Adaware, AVG, and Zone Alarm. Or better yet, just put Linux on it ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Kids WILL screw up computers, and there's no such thing as safe surfing under Win$ IMHO, and Linux has it's problems too, just a bit better better. And most of the Linux oftware is REALLY CHEAP (like free) And Free is good.
Full disclosure: Use Window$ in the shack and keep a real tight leash on it! So Far, mui bueno.

Everyone has their "pet" free programs ...
AdAware is excellent ... Spybot S&D is also. I use both.
I just switched from AVG, which is an excellent program, but they only allow you one license with the free version (I know this means little to some...), and I have 7 computers running here (two are laptops). I switched to avast!, which is also free, and reviews rate it just as good as AVG, plus they give you a license key which is good for all of your home machines.
I got away from the commercial AV stuff years ago ... it just seems like more bloatware that really slows down the computer.
On another note ... my Windows 2000 machine, Pentium III, is slated for an installation of Ubuntu. Been reading comments here, and I'm pretty much out of excuses. Been fooling with computers since 1991, so there's no reason that I haven't tried Linux in some form, except pure laziness.
Wish me luck!

I just did an update of my PCLinuxOS system, took about half an hour with a DSL connection. Runs faster than some newer systems with windows on it.

That old PIII is a perfect candidate to try Linux on. What you might find is that you'll find yourself playing with the "old beast" more often then the "new fangled" Winbox. Once you've hit that stage you'll kiss Bill Gates goodbye forever http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Just last week I did a distribution upgrade on my Kunbuntu install.
Went from 6.10 to 7.04 in one move. Took 45 minutes start to stop. Ended up with the newest versions of all the software installed on my machine along with a new kernel, proper NVIDIA video drivers and header files to match the new kernel, etc....
I do run AVG on the windows side. Both A/V and firewall. One the Linux side I wrote my own firewall with iptables/netfilter and nano.
