I need to copy some files from my old laptop to a new one. ufortunately the file sizes are too large to burn onto disc or use the zip drive I have available (512mb)
How do I go about this with a wireless lan or router...
Both machines on xp

Make the folders 'shared'
Hook the 2 laptops up with USB
Transfer

You've got to have a special USB to USB transfer cable to do that. Basically the USB version of an Ethernet crossover cable. Since you've got to buy a cable anyhow, buy an Ethernet crossover cable and use the Ethernet ports on both machines. It's faster.

Since you already have a router, and I assume your router (like most) has four ethernet ports, it should be fairly easy just to share the folder(s) containing the file(s) you want to move to the other machine.
It's just a matter of right clicking on the folder(s), setting up sharing and you should be able to "see" the shared folder(s) in the "Network Neighbourhood" on the other machine.

He does have a router doesn't he?
#1. Don't try to do this "wirelessly". It's ungodly slow. I speak from experience. My wife had a bout 5Gigs of music she wanted backed up before I flushed her HD and started over on the laptop from hell. Took two hours to transfer that using her wireless connection to my router.
Use a regular old Ethernet cable plugged into the router, share the folders and files you want to transfer and have at it.

My weapon of choice for file transfers of any sort these days is the USB thumb drive. 1Gb drives can be had for under $20, and it's a lot more useful when you're finished transferring than a transfer cable, IMO.

You have files that are too big to fit on a Zip or CD? WOW!
As mentioned before, an Ethernet crossover cable is all you need, assuming both computers have an Ethernet adapter built in. No router needed.

I dont have the router yet, need one since the new laptop has wireless capability. Tired of fighting the wife for internet access anyway.
Largest file that needs to be transferred is 909mb. Which is a a video file. Old laptop does not have dvd burner.

Guys thanks for the info and help.
I searched for the pinouts on a crossover e-net cable.
Cut an existing cable I had extra in two, rewired to make the crossover, soldered and shrink wrapped. Files enroute from comp to comp. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
