Bill Gates once said, "Be nice to nerds, because sooner or later you'll end up working for one."

Let's see the nerds build a power plant.

They can run one until they break it, that's about as far as that goes.

How good is a nerd without electricity?

Nerds shmerds. #Hardhats are what makes today's world go 'round.

Hello.

In the hardhat world there are colors.
The yellow hardhat is the bottom of the barrel.
White hardhats are people like the survey party.
But, the top level? engineers.
And, no matter how you slice it, that is nerdsville.
The man on the machine is now usually a "Mexican" so you better be able to speak Spanish.

Hey turkey, who do you think DESIGNED that power plant? Who do you think is smart enough to get hard hats to do all the physical labor? Right, there's a world of difference between brain and muscle and the chicks know it. "Ooh, he's CUTE!" is what they say in high school but in college they say "Ooh, he's gonna make a LOT of money!"

Yeah, I'm a nerd and proud of it. Huuh huuh huuh... snork!

Colors vary from job to job and usually yellow is for the electricians but not always. The last job I was on we (the electricians) had to wear white hardhats with blue stripes made with tape. The job before that we wore blue hardhats. All the big jobs give out the hardhats in whatever color. I have quite a collection, mostly blue and white. I also have my 'dress' hardhat, one with a real neat metal flake eagle head design on it.

Just curious, how many power plants have you been on? How many hardhats do you have? I helped build a gas fire peaker plant in Zeeland, helped install the fire protection devices on the boiler (while the boiler is running...imagine a 10 story tall room a 1/4 of a block square full of fire and moving side to side 2 or 3 inches a sweep from the force of the fire inside) of the Campbell plant in Port Sheldon and helped install the 50,000 volt TRs in the precips at the BC Cobb plant in Muskegon. Sheldon and Cobb are coal burners.

My experience is that there is no standard hardhat colors and most engineers would be scared to death to go where we have to work. We work up high and right next to pipes with 1000 degree 1000 psi and up steam in them. We work on lines that carry 2500 amperes of current with out heating up (much). While on the precips we may be on the roof of a 270 foot tall building with no guardrails, just a rope so we know where the edge is.

I would LOVE to see how far into the day a true 'nerd' would get with me at a power plant job.

We call them Ang an eers. You would think that with all their smarts they could give us prints without major mistakes in them. Not the case. Very seldom do we get prints that we don't have to correct. You should see the errors. Some of them are outright funny. If the engineers had to build the plant we would still be in the dark.

I don't know if you realize that the electricians that work in power plants have 50 college credits toward an electrical engineering degree if they decide to pursue a job with no pensions. With my credits from college prior to going into the apprenticeship I am only a few credits from a degree if I want to go back to school.

And I know which end of a hammer to hit things with.

Say and think what you want but without the skilled construction trades you would be in the cold and the dark with to power for your computer.

I can design, build, operate and maintain machines to supply me with my energy needs. Not just sketch one out and hope someone will fix my mistakes and build it for me.
