Not really, the fires were because of the frost. They are just going to let it die a natural, unpicked death.

Asparagus farmer may lose farm (http://www.mlive.com/muskegon/stories/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1180968394149010.xml&coll=8)

Is this a good thing or is this a bad thing? #Sure we don't have any migrants up here now, but there are other ramifications as well.....like Michigan needs to be kicked while they are down.

Migrants spend money here, #too....surprised? (http://www.mlive.com/muskegon/stories/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1180968357149010.xml&coll=8)

It's a good thing I hate vegetables, especially asparagus.

Pay more to pick them, and Americans will be there. Trust me on this.

Not likely. #Farmers will just switch to crops that don't require manual labor. #I see it happening here now. #I have seen acres of blueberry fields get sold for urban renewal and not get replaced. #My friends used to go there and pick them. #Cherry orchards which once were ubiquitous are now simply dotting the landscape. #Apple orchards? #Hanging in there, barely.

What will happen is that mechanized farming will totally wipe out family farms so long as the trend to take manual labor out of the picture continues.

K6BBC,
Tony if that were the case there would be more US citizens in the fields. However with the welfare as much as it is no one wants to get off there back sides and go to work. Lets face it those migrant workers work their butt off for that little pay.
First thing US workers would do is form a Union and jack the price up beyond what the consumer is willing to pay.
Then the Democrats would increase the welfare to buy the votes.
NO I think the migrant workers is the best choice for the US consumer.
Beside the GOV. in past administrations have dropped the ball,we now have over 12 million undocumented workers in this country. What are we going to do ship them all home ?? That is a dumb move jut thinking about it. It would cost BILLIONs in over paid GOV UNION wages, and most likely take many years to accomplish. In the mean time more would take their place and a never ending GOV BOONDOGGLE would be created.

The sensible thing would be to document the ones who are here and allow those who wish to go home and return for the next harvest, those who stay, pay taxes and spend their money right here. only they would be documented.

I find this funny. I have NO problem with migrant workers who enter this country legally and go through the process. I DO have a problem with illegal aliens coming into this country, under false pretenses, to make money, send it back home, and taking money out of our economy.

I see a lot of the "it's too expensive to hire Americans" excuse being played. WTF? It's not too expensive, the businesses are just too cheap. If their business model depends on what amounts to be slave labor then there is something really wrong with it. Maybe they should move to Mexico if they can't survive without it.

Then you've got all those that say we can't send these illegals home because of the costs. Got news for ya. We have a Gov that spends thousands of dollars on a bolt, and is throwing billions at a pointless war. What's a few more billion to the national debt? Not much if those citizens that replace the illegals pay their taxes just like every one else.

Heh, then we have the "let's make them all legal just for being here and being cheap labor" camp. Well, if they become legal citizens, doesn't that make them automagically eligible for the citizen pay increase? Wow, never thought of that, huh? I guess then they'd have to find new illegals to take their place.

Living and working in any country without going through the proper processes is illegal. Expect to be deported. Deal with it.

Hello.

Somebody has to pick the asparagus to put it in the can.
The stuff does not grow inside the can. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I noticed that the broccoli farm about a mile from here has the usual crowd of migrant labor. The tomato farms up the road are also busy planting with the army of migrant laborers. I don't know where this guy was getting his workers, maybe they're all over here.

A similar suggestion was made right after the Civil War, to repatriate black ex-slaves to Africa. ("Repatriate" is the wrong term, since nearly every single black slave by that time was born in N. America.) But someone calculated that it would have been physically impossible, because even if every seaworthy ship available at the time had been employed for the mission, the birthrate of newborns would have still exceeded the greatest possible rate of emigration.

When I was a young teenager, I picked vegetables and harvested tobacco for spending money. It was hard work, but a fourteen year old has more than enough energy for the job.

The problem today is that teenagers no longer work in many parts of the country. Illegal and legal aliens now hold many of the jobs that were formerly held by teenagers (anyone visited a McDonald's lately?). Personally, I believe that a little hard work would do the current generation of teenagers a little good. It does not take a rocket scientist to see what not having to hold a job until one finishes college has done to the “twentysomethings.”

Just saw an interesting stat: Some twenty percent of the children being born in the US are the children of illegals. Of course, when one is born in the US, one is automatically a citizen -- a policy that served us well, but is now going to be called into question by those forces pushing against immigration in its many forms.

We have created our own nightmare in the US by fostering social programs as entitlements without any sense of real responsibility for them, whether by the elected legislators who pass them, or by the bureaucrats that administer them, or by the "poor" folks who benefit from them. All this has been done in order to gain constituencies for political partisans, and not to benefit anyone.

The US is the only nation in the world where there is a very large percentage of fat "poor" people. That fact alone speaks volumes.

Think about it.
