like we really care WHAT they have to say, just stay off 10 meters ....or is that too complicated of an idea ? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Ahhhh..... so you want new hams to use this interesting terminology, huh?

Don't be surprised if you don't get more people using it thinking it's acceptable - because they saw it on QRZ.com.

Quote[/b] ]1). Listen (READ) well before you speak (WRITE), many parts of the country differ on their protocols and terminology.

2). Always be polite

3). Minimize the "Slang". When you talk to someone on the radio, use it like you would a telephone with one added restraint - don't use profanity. It doesn't take a BIG man to swear, it's takes a BIG man to convey his thoughts and feelings WITHOUT swearing.

Hmmm... Can't go wrong there. Could that also be good form for posting at the ZED? At least the preface was great advice for CB'ers or Hams. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I got to Afterburner, too. And remembered that was the actual trade name of some CB amps in the early 1970s. Then my ulcers got the best of me. Did the list really go into the Bs?

Please tell me people don't actually talk like that anymore?

....and of course we all know what a squelch tail is. #KB2VXA coined the term "tailgators" here (http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=9;t=109424;st=29), back in December '05. #These are the long-winded guys who key the mic immediately after someone else unkeys, leaving absolutely no space between their transmissions - back and forth, back and forth, no room for breaks, "alligator stations" riding each other's squelch tails. #Tailgators! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I just finally, nearly after a year of purchasing the IC-7000, have been running it on HF mobile. Okay, mostly listening. On 20 meters the other night, I heard two guys up around 14.305 and they had great signals, but I couldn't understand a single thing these guys were saying.

Things like "I have a lot of aluminum pointed at you" and "this is my bigger battleship".

Is this what the hobby is coming to?

Yes it is.

Quote[/b] ]QSK - Another Ham term, reformatted for CB. Means – "Break"
Oh yeah, I love me this one!

I admit, I never heard the "bigger battleship" comment on CB.

Like it or not, the citizens' band was a major cultural influence in the 1970s. I recall statistics that said fully half the vehicles on American roads had a CB installed. Thinking back, I'd say it was more. Back then CB was a tool for the masses. Sure it was goofy but so were the TV shows. The thing was the CBers weren't trying to be or imitate hams. The SSB freebanders (they were called "HFers" in NJ) were, but they were in the minority. And FCC and the US Marshalls arrested them regularly.

I had a CB as a teenager. I was a ham first, so I didn't "come from CB." I used the CB then much as I use my cell phone and kids text each other now. My teenage buddies were on CB (like half the rest of society) and I liked to BS with them. Again though, CB was CB and hamming was something else.

But yeah, I remember a lot of the terms on that list. They're just like CB and TV were back then: goofy.

Thanks for the goofy memory; I for one can separate the two issues and chuckle about it.

I looked for the term "Pill"...Couldn't find it.
I remember the first time I read the term, on Ebay, something about an "8 PILL' Amp.....took a few minutes to figure it all out.

God, what a bunch of idiocy, but, got to admit, funny !! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Well, thanks for the free WL2K download, now what?

"Thank you from one Hamster to another!"

Yeah, but can you SING?

"alligator stations" riding each other's squelch tails. Tailgators!"

I guess I did coin that term back in '05, some are so bad the effect is cumulative and the last one wonders why his three words timed out the repeater.

Chris, on channel 18 if they weren't in Noke they were in E O Town or Lo Tack City. Now where were they? For the bonus points list the ham callsigns of Stereo, Ramblin' Jack and The Tidy Bowl Man.

I got my fill of CB a decade before you when it was pretty much like 2M, laid back, casual, orderly and we spoke plain English. By the time you came along it was a culturally degenerate tool for the asses. Around that time quite a few hams I knew were also CBers, the smart ones dumped it and the smart alecks changed it from Citizens Band to Chop Busting. If ya cain't beat 'em, join 'em, just be better at it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
