Well, these days most VHF packet radio is being used for APRS. There's not that much activity, however, there may be some in your area.

Do you have a TNC already? You can also use a sound card if you don't have one.

Check out this site. (http://patmedia.net/ralphmilnes/soundcardpacket/)

You may want to buy or build a sound card interface, as it will serve you for other modes besides packet as well, using your PC sound card.

As for what it is - Packet radio simply means that you are sending and receiving data in "packets" over the air. If you're familiar with computer networking, a packet is a burst of data sent with a header and a payload. The header contains things like addressing information etc.

It used to be popular before the internet, as it enabled hams to communicate digitally with other hams, for free.

Now, it's mostly being used in conjunction with GPS in what is called APRS.

Welcome to amateur radio!

Go here to find out about packet radio: http://www.tapr.org/pr_intro.html

Read this short piece and then you can come back and ask more specific questions. Asking vague questions will get you vague answers!

TAPR has some good information left over from the days when they supported amateur packet radio. - Unfortunately, they no longer do.

USPacket.Org (http://www.uspacket.org) has taken up some of the slack there, picking up where TAPR leaves off. Stop by and you'll find that there is a lot more to Packet radio than APRS.

Also: Email me directly and I'll be glad to pitch in on the nuts n bolts end of things.
