I'm registered and logged in. Is there some upper tier of posting privileges that I'm not understanding?

I'll give you a round about answer. But an administrator can give you more detailed reply.
I'm pretty sure that only registered callsigns are permitted to post in the "talk and opinion" forum. I think the only forums you have access to with a "nickname" are the Q and A forum and the "ragchew" forum. I believe the talk and opinion forum is reserved for only licensed amateurs.
If you have an amateur callsign, why not use it for your login? Otherwise, the subject matter in that forum is supposed to be restricted to the opinion of licensed hams. I think this is to minimize "trolls" from hams who want to stir the pot in controversial issues or to prevent people from other <ahem> services from making a mockery.

I've passed my test, but haven't been assigned a call sign yet, so I simply signed in with the nick I use on a few other hobby discussion sites. I used the online practice tests here a lot, and once I passed thought I'd see what was in the forums.
I can see the logic behind the restriction ... though I would encourage the moderators to perhaps make the resulting "error message" a bit more informative.
Hopefully I'll be able to "upgrade" my account once my call sign is assigned.

Non ham members are restricted to what sections of the website that they can post to. Once you get your license send an email to editor@qrz.com and I will update your account to reflect the change.
