Quote[/b] ]People think they are doing themselves good, but in the best case nothing happens and in the worst case it actually causes harm.

It always goes back to this basic notion, people do this because they think it's good for them. But what people are taking needs to be addressed carefully. There's a notion that selenium might protect against prostate cancer. There's a whole literature on the possible beneficial effects of these substances on cancer, and specifically prostate cancer, and that is probably true. But additional research is needed in parsing down what is the actual dosage and what is the relationship between the actual dosages. Can you actually overdose? Not like a drug overdose but a chronic overdose or excessive use or over-supplementation.

I did a quick search and couldn't find it right away, but there was an article in the NYT Magazine (I think) about food and nutrition.

The author's basic premise of the was that if you separate the food from the nutrition, you lose a lot of the value of both. #Sure, polished and refined grains have vitamins added back in. #But there are thousands of other substances in the grains that are eliminated in processing. #Substances that may be important nutrients but have not yet been isolated. #Even when we discover those nutrients, the author goes on to point out, there may be synergistic actions of these nutrients together with the food "carrier" that make them good for us. #When the substances are separated, we lose those synergies.

Excessive doses of anything are not beneficial for good health, except fresh air. People wonder why they never feel well when they swallow vast amounts of liquor, beer, smoke, drugs, medication and even an excessive intake of water can cause serious problems. For those who might miss a mention about Morse code, excessive operating can cause a serous problem called "glass arm".
