You could home brew a Zepp.
Just drag 167 feet of #12 stranded behind the truck.
Congrats and welcome to HF. It's huge fun.
Just wait 'till you get your first QSL card from some far away land and realize that your signal went from antenna to antenna that far and was copied. I still think that is so cool!

You won't get many people to hear you on 80 metres unless they live within 20 miles. Do you know how much RF is radiated from a 100 watts on a mobile antenna on 80 ? About half a watt !

Hmmm I guess my 160 m mobile antenna sucks too then and all those guys I talk to in NM, AZ, and CA were lying to me about how good my signal was. BTW I only run 100 watts with my Icom 706MKIIG into a Pro-Am multiband antenna for 10-15-20-160.
Next time give the guy a break and add some constructive criticism instead of telling him only 1 watt is getting out. He may not have it tuned properly or something else may be wrong. Who knows but comments like that make newcomers not want to take the plunge into the world of HF.

my Little Tarheel II is on a Diamond Heavy Duty trunk lip mount attached to the rear hatch on a Saturn VUE. I was able to check into MARS nets on 86M just fine with 100Watts from the FT-100D. Guess a 1/2 watt works better than you might think?

thanks for the replies, been working with swr on 20 and 40m and seems to work better.May just get some ham sticks, the jumper wire gets to be a hassle but working hf is great.......thanks, Terry
