My maternal grandparents, who were born and raised in Wales (grandmother from Wrexham, grandfather from Cardiff), used to refer to the British Royal Family as "a bunch of &%$# Germans!"

I was travelling through town yesterday just after 5:00pm eastern and the State Troopers had shut down I-64 from Richmond to Williamsburg. NOBODY was allowed to use that road (in the eastbound direction) for the entire time she was on it.

What is it with women and horses ? Women have this thing for horses.

My girlfriend recently joined a riding club devoted to keeping the elegant art of olde English ladies side saddle riding alive. She just spent about $1000.00 on a fancy riding habit so she can dress authentically when she goes out riding wth the ladies. next she is going to want to buy her own side saddle. I #shudder to think what the heck that is going to cost. But the real kicker will be when she finally decides to invest in her own horse.

I am just grateful that I am nowhere near Churchhill Downs today. I cannot imagine what a mess that is this weekend. My understanding that the normal Kentucky Derby weekend is a zoo, especially with the post 9-11 security measures in force, but with the British Queen and her group in town, I cannot even begin to comprehend what a mess that is. Wouldn't you just love to be the race track's head of security the last few weeks?

Oh well, I am not much for horse racing anyway so missing yet another Derby isn't a disappointment for me.

Very strange about the British Royal Family.

The family name of the Royals is Windsor, since the name was changed by King George V before the Great War because the true family name was German.

The Queens first son is HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, a title held by the eldest son of the monarch, since about say, 1400 give or take a few years.

However, the sons of Charles Windsor have now become Willy and Harry Wales, how that happened nobody has ever explained.

If Harry will be driving around Iraq with Wales on his helmet then I think Willy should have a helmet with England or Scotland on the front.

I'm not surprised. 3 different women I have known were enthusiastic about horses, and as I mentioned my present girl friend is a recreational horseback rider and enthusiast. 2 women where i work are recreational horse owners. Now I understand this is only a small and non representative sampling but, by and large it seems (from my limited scope) that women are far more enthusiastic horse fanatics than men...I don;t know one guy who is interested in horses. So that statistic of 90% of US horse owners being women doesn't surprise me.

And apparently the Queen is among them.

That's true IF the saddle is not properly fitted, just as it is for all saddles, whether roping, cutting, jumping, dressage, eventing, harness, etc.

The problem is that very few saddlers know how to properly fit a sidesaddle simply because there are so few of them in use.

Women do make up the lion's share of the equestrian sports, except perhaps for driving, cutting, roping, and bronc riding. And at the upper levels of the other disciplines you'll find about a 50-50 split.

That is pretty much what she told me when I asked her if riding sidesaddle might be rough on the horse. She said it's a matter of the saddle being properly fitted and balanced to both horse and rider. A good sidesaddle is also very expensive as they are rare these days. She got into it because she loves horses and riding and likes the idea of preserving the ild tradition of sidesaddle riding. They even dress in 17th century (or whatever century it was popular) riding habits to give it that authentic look and feel. I hate to think about how much money she's going to have to shell out when it comes time to buy her own saddle.

I myself know very little about horses. I never rode a horse and know nothing about riding them or care and maintenance. Like most males I prefer riding things that are made out of iron and steel and that burn petroleum based fuels.

I'll probably accompany her out to the barn, or stables, or whatever they call the places they keep horses. She's been anxious to show me the horses and show me around. I told her I'l like to watch her ride so I'll probably make it on out there some time this summer. Who knows, maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Didn't know they had barrel races in sidesaddle. Matter of fact I didn;t know anyone even rode sidesaddle anymore until she told me all about it. I thought side saddle riding was something relagated to past history and movies about old times. Apparently there are people keeping it alive.

Ladies in England were measured for a sidesaddle Because.
It seems that the front of a normal saddle , the bit that rises called the Horn of the saddle , on a gallop, caused Ladies to become Horny.
Now for the Gentry of England to find their Ladies Horny, and only wanting to partake in Port and fine wines, and maybe a frolic in the hay with a buxom wench, to find their respective Wives having ridden themselves to their horniness. A solution had to be found.
An appeal was sent to the English physicts of that time to design a saddle, without a Horn, which with use the respective Ladies would not become horny.
So was designed and patented the side saddle.

And there became the "trotting" horses of that time.

That only applies if you are one of her subjects. We Yanks are not expected to bow or curtsey either.

Which explains the invention of the Orgasmatron Saddle (http://mocoloco.com/art/archives/003153.php)!

She's cool. When Bush stuck his foot in his mouth, she made light of it.

The Queen of the UK was given a 21 gun salute...as well as a lavish white-tie dinner with the president of the USA.... #All at the expense of the American taxpayers. # What more can she expect?

The USA had helped England defeat the Germans in WW2. #FDR was a personal friend of Churchill. #The US helped England recover from WW2. #The British had suffered from the German blitz and the Americans never got bombed at home. #I know well how the British suffered because I had cousins there. #After the war the living standards of most British were far below the living standards of most Americans...but today there is no need to feel sorry for the British. #The grand children of my British cousins live better than I can and have better health insurance than I can buy. #They travel over the world as if they own it...which was formally the role of wealthy ugly Americans.

But...It a grand show to welcome the Queen...and we know she is only symbolic. #Maybe she should have avoided visiting the USA at this time where both Bush (in the US) and Blair (in the UK) have been recognized as liars...but her visit can bear no real political agreement with crucial policies...it is only symbolic and meant to be only a symbolic display of mutual avoidance of reality....but the symbolic visit of a Prince to Iraq...might not be the same sort of thing if he happens to get killed by a road bomb...which wouldn't only be a symbol....I think.

w2ilp (I Like Princes)...They can be braver than Kings. #Kings can only be stale-mated.

Bravo fellow Quester

Southern Hospitality was not overlooked or forsaken in any way for the queen's visit.

When she passed by my way, I stopped her motorcade and offered her some vittles, that being the custom in these parts.

I said: "Yo queenie, dig yer mitts into my bag of Toasty Charm Country Fresh Rutabaga Dillweed Chips. They're yum yum good. And you're welcome to a sip of my beer too.

She graciously accepted as she appeared quite famished, and seemed to enjoy the rutabaga chips and schlitz with gusto. Her belching during our chat afterwards was a bit annoying, but I says to myself, hey...she's the fooking queen of England, I guess I can cut her some slack.
