I want to get a SteppIR. I've been deliberating between a SteppIR and Force 12, but I've finally decided that the SteppIR is it.

However, I've heard that their lead time is 8 weeks or so.

I'm curious to know if anyone has recently been able to order one, and how much lead time they're currently estimating?

I called and left a message.

I'm thinking either the MonstIR 40m - 6m or the 4 element 20m - 6m.

I spoke with the lady at SteppIR about 2 weeks ago. I inquired as to the lead time on a pair of MonstIR's. She told me 8 - 10 weeks as of right now. All other SteppIR yagis are of a shorter lead time she stated. Since I'm not interested in anything but the MonstIR's, I did not inquire what she meant by a shorter wait time.

Spend the extra couple of grand on the MonstIR. Easy for me to say, I know..........Few have yagis on 40 meters & even fewer have one for 30 meters. You will be HUGE on both of these bands with a MonstIR.

I can email you the price quote for my MonstIR if you wish. Just ignore the shipping cost to Montserrat.

I got to use a SteppIR on Saturday after helping to install the 30/40m upgrade.

Talk about a sweet antenna!

If the price is the same as on the website, that's $4395.

I am seriously thinking about the MonstIR because as you said, few have yagis on 40, and I was planning on a 40m yagi anyway.

8-10 weeks should put me in the same timeframe as my tower...

If you are considering spending $4400, you might as well get "all the candy".

6 meter package....$150
33 Volt upgrade.....$40
Radio cables..........$70

These are the numbers that SteppIR quoted me on the peripherals.

Also the antenna controller cables are not cheap. They are just under $1 per foot.......Hope to work you MonstIR to MonstIR next year.

Glad to see there is someone else who also believes in a 1st class install project.

This is gonna be fun!!!

Ryan, just in case you can't put that tower up, ie the other thread, I will be more than happy to take any antennas you dump your money into as well off your hands. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Good one, but the permit has been approved.

Nothing short of a catastrophic event will stop this tower from going up.

You're welcome to come by and operate though. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Good to know, thanks.

As I understand it, the control cable is shielded, no? That would explain $1/foot.

As for first class install, definitely. This is my dream. There are no shortcuts.

Not sure, but I would assume so.

On my quote it only states, "16 conductor control cable" for it's description.

I agree. This is the antenna to get!
They told me 4-6 weeks lead time for the "standard" 4 el with 6 meters.
You give them your credit card number at the time of the order, They do not actually bill the card until shipment day.

Hello.

How reliable is the SteppIR?
I would think that with all the little motors whizzing about there may be issues.
It is not exactly a minor inconvenience to change one.

Those were my thoughts exactly when the StepIR antenna first came out. I figured, Sure, Nice idea, but how long will that last in the real world.

Well, Now years later they have survived many northern winters, Ice storms and all!

Very reliable record! # # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

....
... and in a couple of years I can tell you how they cope with 98% rH and a salty sorrounding (plus 55-70 knot winds from time to time...)

That's true.

I was cautioned about that by an antenna/tower installer who says he's replaced a few elements on SteppIRs.

However, I'm willing to accept that risk.

Besides, what about the rotor? That has a motor and gears too, and that is under a lot more stress than the SteppIR's motors. With a 180 degree turn without turning the antenna, I'll actually be saving my rotor.

How about the folks with crank up towers? Moving parts and motors too.

If someone who owns a SteppIR could convince me that the motors will fail regularly and that it will be a b*** to replace them, please let me know.

Otherwise, I really don't see a problem.

Salt/sea is not a problem. I live inland.

Ice/snow is a problem, but they are designed to withstand it. If worse comes to worse, I have insurance.

High winds can be a problem, but I have insurance for that too.

Lightning, ditto.

btw, the SteppIR folks told me lead time is approx 10-12 weeks. Seems fair enough. I'll place my order today.
