The Icom IC-V8 has 5.5 watts high and 500 mw low. The radio has 107 channels and ctcss and dcs and also repeater tones. I like the radio for local repeater use but you need a mobile to get good distance but overall the radio is very nice. I really like the looks. It also has DTMF keypad. Looking for a HT get an Icom IC-V8. I keyed up a repeater 42 miles north of me with 5.5 watts but my transmission wasn't very good but I was suprised I could key the repeater up.

I have it since april... i use it daily as i am /p a lot... i also use it when i do some almost x-tream cycling... it is mounted on my left shoulder... and u know what?... God damn it's is extra heavy duty, works super, great rx audio and tx audio. battery consumption is to high (i have 2 batts. one 1660 mAh if i remember well and the other that was supplied with this HT)

it could have few more pwr steps.. 1W would be great, though i manage to work our Sr5W repeater from almost anywhere in Warsaw - with 5w. It does rx some qrm etc. but it is a HT and when u use it in a building be sure to rx some cable tv qrm - but not on 2m.

What i love abt most is that it is almost like them Motorola HT... heavy duty...

This is my first radio. After doing a lot of searching I settled on this radio to be my first one because I had no idea at the time what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go with my HAM ticket.

The only problem I have with the radio is the number pad is not back lit. For night time operation this world be helpful. Other then that this has been a grate first time radio and I highly recommend it to anyone who is just getting started. The power is grate; the controls are simple, over all it is a simple radio to use. I am glad I did my research before I bought my first radio.
