Actually, this new is a few months old.
I like the idea, though. Too bad it is on a D'hell. Just hope the other "brands" will follow suit. But with VISDUH, I believe they will have to.

You've always been able to buy Dell servers with RHEL on it.
Er, well last couple years at least.

Dell did a survey on their website a month or so ago asking folks what they wanted to see Dell do. The number one request by a long shot was that Dell make available computers with pre-installed Linux.
They've apparently committed to doing it, and supposedly are trying to figure out which distro to pre-install. I'm not holding my breath though because Dell has made noises about pre-installing Linux before and then backed off.
Dell does sell desktop PC's with Linux pre-installed ... in China.
Aside from that to the best of my knowledge they only sell server boxes with pre-installed Linux.

Hello.
We got some new Dell computers, was the response the office manager said.
What about Linux?
I looked at the documentation, preloaded with XP, but Linux is indeed an option.
By this I mean Linux can be installed directly from the provided disks, as a LiLo option or the only OS.
So, yes, not preloaded, but it is the next best thing.

That's interesting!
The only option I'd heard of before was that if you did an archaeological excavation of their website you'd find on offer some "no O/S" boxes.

It's now "official".
Dell will be offering computers with pre-installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) starting some time around the end of May, 2007.
Here's a link to an article on the "PC World" website.

Has anyone ever thought to get their PC sans o/s (tell them to shove Micro$oft), and get a distro from one of the Linux magazines or books?
Just don't get some oddball architecture that needs Windows tweeks to work right.
I vote for SuSE 10.2 right now. Best ever, and you don't have to re-learn the gotchas that Windows has with every new version.

Of course! I build my own machines! But, average Jane and Joe computer user and businesses for that matter mostly purchase "off the shelf" boxes from one of the big manufacturers.
And because all of these machines come with pre-loaded Windows, it's been a very significant barrier to seeing much more widespread adoption of Linux on desktops and notebooks.
But now, a very significant PC manufacturer has made the decision to offer consumers a choice in operating systems.
Hopefully Lenovo, HP, Gateway etc. will decide to do the same sometime in the next year.

Hello.
Dell not only offers Linux as an option but XP as well.
I know of hundreds of sony VAIO customers who have returned their purchase as Vista will not work for them.
Sony RMA is R-ST"original order #"-xxx.
The ST or SW, ST is telesales and SW is web purchase.
So, tracking what sony is doing is real easy.
I would like to see Microsoft have a policy of sending out a dual-boot configuration, like what was done with windows 3.1 and windows 95.
Just put a warning on, do not surf the web with XP.
Or, one can always get a Mac. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I tried to buy an "OSless" box from D'hell and Gate$way a couple of years back (for my kid who was heading to college and could buy anything M$ for $5 a program) and nobody would sell one.. Even tried some vendors at a local show, and the best they'd do was knock $20 off the price.
My solution was to buy a couple of "well burned in" (=used) 3 gig p-4's from a local thrift shop, and a couple of 100 gig HDs from Office Depot ($19 each) and make them dual boot with FC. (A pain on the D'hell because of a bizzare bios).
Were I to do it today, I'd just use Ubuntu, which rumor has it will nicely and non-destructively repartition an NTFS drive and dual boot with no issues except the usual Ubuntu issues (no user accounts, use sudo instead).
As PIU said, ExPee shouldn't go anywhere close to the internet (although I let mine go to the NOAA/NWS website and one or two others AT MY PERIL!) http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

That's not entirely true. It is possible in the "Ubuntu" family of distros to create non-privileged user accounts. It's just a somewhat different process than most other distros.

Too bad they still won't sell "retail" without Norton and Works on them... and I do know how to uninstall the crapware :-)
