Hi all,

I was looking thru the QRZ Census numbers and something struck me as being odd.

The states with the fewest numbers of Amateur Ops.

ND .22
WY .22
SD .22
DE .19

Now I expected DE and WY to be on the low side because WY is not exactly overcrowded and DE is pretty small in area. BUT why ND and SD I do not understand.

The area is neither crowded nor vacant. Yet the numbers of hams are small. Any suggestions why the lower numbers?

Hmmmmm, seems to me that there is another way to think this through. #The QRZ census data that you are refering to is a percentage of the total number of hams in the US and territories. #As one might expect, those states with the smaller populations would have the lowest percentage of hams, when compared to this total. #Notice that the rankings of the lowest percentage include Montana, Vermont, South Dakota, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Delaware. #Each of these states has less than one million residents (See http://www.speroni.com/FCC/NewStates/States1A.htm). #Thus, it makes sense that these states would contribute the least to the total number of hams in the US.

However, if you look at the ratio of total hams in a state and the total population of the state, things even out a little more. #(seehttp://www.speroni.com/FCC/NewStates/States2A.htm). #You'll see that, for example, North Dakota is nearly smack dab in the middle with 2.42 hams per 1000 people in that state. #

Actually, this then brings up the question as to why Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and New York have low ratios of hams per total populations.

Hopes this helps or at least doesn't hinder too much

RE PHI

If you could see the standards set by our Public School System in Louisiana you would probably be asking why do we have so many?

I wish I were jerking your chain but the public school standards leave a lot to be desired.
