Looking for a good set of washers and dryers. We went out and got a dryer and it seems to be doing quite well. It is one of those Samsungs. It is real quiet and drys the clothes in the time it takes to wash a load. Pretty fast. These cost about as much as a decent HF rig.

Anyone else tried these or know of a good appliance company anymore? Maytag is sold off and everything now to Whirlpool.

I bought a W/D pair that were Bosch and we had nothign but trouble. My XYL bought a pair of Maytags as replacement, and we've been very happy with them. Did you say Maytag is sold off?

I bought the Maytag front load Neptune series washer and dryer. We are very happy with them. They use DC motors and rather than a wig-wag, they rotate the drum different directions with a pause between. The Neptune is very quiet.

Last time I went to Home Depot. The Fridgidaire brand was made in China. At least for the Air-conditioners it was. Refridgerators? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Home page for this site:

http://www.usstuff.com/prodlist.htm

Personally I dont care what front company owns what. I buy American MADE products whenever I can.
My dad bought a Fridgidaire Fridge in 1963. GM owned it then. #It ran for over 30 years. Now any appliance store will tell you a "fridge" will last you 10-12 years. I wonder why? Could it be inferior outsourced junk, made by someone making 3 cents an hour?

PS. I bought a Maytag Fridge 7 years ago. Made in the USA. Runs whisper quiet. It's superb.

Sorry I don't know about the W-D. Just had to get my 2 cents in. I think the front loading washers are neat. I think the front loading washers save on water too.

"Planned obsolescence." #Nothing is built to last any more - they'd rather sell you a new widget every ten years than sell you one every fifty years. #They don't make 'em like they used to because there's no profit in it.

My refrigerator came with the apartment. #I have no idea how old it is, but it's clearly not a new model - if I had to guess, I'd say it's from perhaps the mid-1980's - and it still works just fine.

I manage a parts store .

Whirlpool encompasses Kitchenaid , Roper , Whirlpool , Maytag , Jen Air , Admiral , Magic Chef , and the dead makes Maytag owned . ( I may of forgotten some )

Now lets make something clear , no real Maytag laundry is made anymore . The last years of Maytag as Maytag has been Norge style machines and rebadged Amanas . Anyone with a Maytag washer with a model begining in LAT or MAT has the last of her kind .

Electrolux owns all of the appliance brands White Consolidated liquidated . Including White Westinghouse , Gibson , Tappan , Figidaire , and the makes they killed off .( I may of forgotten some )

Amana , and any other brands Raytheon owned were sold to Maytag several years ago , except for the a/c line which was sold to someone else . So now Whirlpool owns them too .( I may of forgotten some )

Sub Zero bought Wolf .

Speed Queen is owned by Alliance , and while they are simmilar to Amana laundry on the home style products , Speed Queen uses less plastic . Alliance refuses to warranty a machine if they find Amana parts in it .

Kenmore is just a Sears house brand . ANYONE could of made their machines . Most of the laundry is Whirlpool sourced .

GE is GE , Hotpoint , and RCA ( which they killed off for appliances , Thomson owns RCA for audio/video ) . And for confusion . GE bought the old Roper plant , but Whirlpool bought Roper . Ge made their stoves like Ropers and Whirlpool made the Roper stoves like Whirlpool .

So much more to it , but thats the basics of it .

now there's a brand new washer downstairs ... replaced by the maint contract (which cost one half of what the original washer cost, and one quarter of what the replacement washer would have cost).

We bought a front load washer with matching dryer from Home Depot. The units are made by LG. Not one single problem, and the things are built like tanks. VERY happy, says the wife. And you know what they say about wife NOT being happy.

I'm not impressed with Maytag. Our Neptune washer has had two new circuit boards and a new drum (failed bearing). Our Maytag dishwasher has had a new circuit board and serveral other repair calls. After the first Neptune board and $180 plus the service call, I got an extended warranty on it and the dishwasher and haven't paid any more repair charges. I know they say never buy the extended warranty but I sure has paid off on the Maytag stuff. The Neptune sounds (rumbles like a freight train when spinning) as if the drum bearing is going again.

That is interesting. It parallels what has happened to commercial communications gear. The quality and reliability has taken a huge dump IMO, while prices have plummeted.

Edit: I mean low-density microwave carrier equipment. On reflection, the two-way stuff is pretty awesome and I am not working with high-density microwave anymore because it is mostly fiber optic now.

Edit #2: I wonder if 2-way stuff is better because we still have strong brand names? We are pretty much exclusively Motorola.

Ours worked fine until the warranty ran out. Then we had controller board problems, switch problems, etc.

One irritant is that there was a protection switch in the Bosch dryer that kicks in when a clogged vent is detected and *it*is*not*user*resettable*! I paid over $100 on a service call only to learn that the guy merely reset the hidden switch and cleaned the lint filter. Since my dryer vent has to go through a couple of turns and about 40' to exit the house, this switch was on the verge of tripping even when everything was sparkling clean.

At least I learned about something to look for in house design. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I bought a Kenmore (Whirlpool) pair 4 1/2 years ago. They were about 75/80% up the quality/price scale of their top of the line. The hi capacity dryer is great but the agitator speed on the washer is either too slow or too fast. I should have gotten the 3 speed model, which was the top of the line mother.

I think the front loaders are best but rather spendy. Do a good job of getting the clothes clean with minimal trauma to the fabric, use less water & detergent too.

The Neptune isn't what killed Maytag.
Maytag management killed Maytag.
They let their Newton, Iowa plant get so out of date that it was going to cost 9 digits to modernize it. They couldn't compete with the Whirlpool's of the world so they sold out. Buying Amana didn't help either.

We own a Bosch Stove (gas) and a Bosch Dishwasher. Quietest dishwasher I've ever heard. The first time we ran it I opened up the door just to make sure it was running. The refrigerator is an Amana and our laundry pair are Maytag (not Neptune). They were all new 3 years ago

I absolutely refuse to buy appliances from the "Big Box" stores and prefer to do business with a local Mom and Pop appliance shop who've been there for years and know these machines inside and out. We paid a little more but it's worth it.

I’ll second that. The one we had was a Speed Queen. It was really kind of neat because you just tossed whatever in and went away and it would be all dry and ready to wear or iron or something.

When you let the laundry build up a bit it was a real bugger. If we just ran it through the wash cycle then took the wet stuff to the Laundromat and dried it or hung it on the lines outside the job went a lot faster.

The built in dryer was really slow. Nice if you had all the time in the world but if you were really trying to get stuff done so you could wear it right away it was way to slow.

KA2HNB and I purchased our Whirlpool washer/dryer pair in 1987. They still work just fine, but I have made several repairs in the last 5 years.

Washer:
motor (the smoke came out) in 2002 - $90

Dryer:
belt in 2003 - $7
timer in 2007 - $70
rollers in 2007 - $15

These things are not difficult to repair. Anyone smart enough to earn a ham license should be able to do it.

Parts and manuals are available from many places. google "appliance repair parts" for internet sources or look in the yellow pages for a local source.

I have been pumping the money into these washer's and dryers for years as well. The timer finally quit on this Maytag dryer, and the gas valve had quit. I had replaced the igniter on it and the blower fan in the past 2 years. Also, there are large air exit seals that were giving out and lint was getting spewed out as well. The unit was not put together well, and old seal needed replaced. I was needing $200 of parts to work on this thing myself. I had $150 from the past few years into it.

I work on my furnace as well. On the controller board, there was a resistor that had a cold solder joint that I was able to troubleshoot and repair. That saved a fortune with a few drops of solder.

I am looking to find something that is very functional and reliable. I was hoping this Samsung fit the bill. My XYL is happy that she has something nice in the house as well. The 7.3 Cu In tub drys very fast.

We bought an LG TROMM washer and matching dryer.

It's white with stainless steel door. It's in the basement otherwise we would have gotten the whole thing in stainless steel.

The washer is a front loader high efficiency. Uses less water and the spin cycle is super fast so the clothes are almost dry when they come out of the washer. When spin drying it sounds like an airplane ready to take off. But it is very quiet during the wash.

The dryer is a gas dryer which came with the natural gas orifice but I converted it to LP. The sensor dry works ok, it won't get your clothes nice and crispy but it's dry enough. You can set it on manual dry and it comes out very dry. We use sensor dry to save gas, however. It is also very quiet.

The LG's are built like tanks, I agree.

HD gave us a $150 gift card plus they rebated the delivery charge.

Gift card went towards a new pressure washer.

We also bought a new whirlpool dishwasher to replace the Maytag which was the subject of a recall. The old dishwasher was also leaking. They gave us only $75 towards the dishwasher but lowe's gave us a gift card and free delivery.

We had our Maytag dishwasher repaired under the recall. There was nothing wrong with it, besides the chance that it might burst into flames. That cost them far more than $75 - the interior door panel and everthing in the door was replaced, plus a few other things. The guy spent 2 hours at my house. Took them 4 tries to ship the correct set of parts for my machine. I'm sure Maytag/Whirlpool prefers people to take the coupon and buy a new one.

I wanted a new one anyway. We got it with the house and it was in a bad state. I don't think they could have repaired it anyway.

The new one uses less water, has more features and is much quieter.
