There are some nasty static crashes on 75m tonight and it looks like they are being caused by some bad thunderstorms coming in from Ohio.

Yep, first week on hr and all I get is noise http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
This is why the ARRL 160 Meter contest is in November.
This is also why the GERATOL (Greetings Extra Radio Amateurs Tired of Operating Lately?) net only operates (a 75 meter WAS net for Extra Class license holders) from October through April.
Oh yeah, welcome to amateur radio!

With all due respect and esteem, sir--the ARRL 160M contest is the first weekdend of December. It's great! Get home from work, start calling CQ, and as the sun sinks, start cranking them in. I love that contest!

Well technically, it does actually start in November this year.

Wow! This year it certainly does--2 hours before Dec 1 Zulu.
They show more flex with that than RYRU. Those rules specify first January weekend but never Jan 1.

You said it, Steve. In Pensacola, Havana was always in like 1 and 2 land on 40M at night. I could hear the really weak ones talking to each other in Cuba. Same for the Carribian Islands. Wasn't really DX.

As for summertime static on 75m, this is just another of the many things the newcomers to HF will learn about. And to all the know-it-alls we heard from before 23 Feb: we told ya you didn't know everything.
Now go get on the air and learn to make contacts in spite of the conditions!

On weather boards we often had that discussion over copyright. WSI has one of the most strictest policies of any of the wx outlets (and also the crappiest quality.)
Use the NWS radar images, they are free to copy, since our taxpayer dollars pay for that service http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It really isn't necessary to post any radar images here.
As Charlie points out, there's no need to get on QRZ and tell everybody there are lots of lightning crashes. Geez, anybody already listening to HF knows it, and nobody else cares. I can't imagine a bunch of folks seeing the original post and saying "whoa, gotta fire up the HF rig so I can hear that!"
I ain't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but if I hear lightning crashes, I'm pretty sure there's a thunderstorm out there someplace... and if I want to know where, I betcha I could find a weather radar image on a website someplace.

The big problem linking Doppler images is that they're updated every few minutes. IOW at the time of this posting it's perfectly clear!
BTW, are Cubans still permitted to own private equipment, or do they use 'club' stations? The few I've worked on CW have been 'club' stations.
Edited to add: BTW, operating through QRN is excellent real-world practice. It's not gonna be Q5 copy during a hurricane!

Many opt to use club stations because it is difficult to get equipment and parts.

Cubans have had home stations for decades. CO2BB and CM2PB kept the 40m Novice warm 32 years ago. It was the Soviets who had few personal stations until 1990.
What hasn't been imported to Cuba since 1959 is electrolytic capacitors and the ones from before that have long ago dried out. CO2BB was the best of them with a T7 note.

I think Charlie actually has it nailed. You missed a calling as a newspaper reporter and your posting frenzy is an extension of that. Do morticians have a periodical you could write for? "Mortician's Times" or something?
Anyway, posting that there is noise on 75 meters is kind of like posting that you have to press the PTT BEFORE talking into your microphone. All but the most braindead hams already know this.

Yes Greg, but think about it. Why would someone up north care that the static crashes are weaker in Florida? Their recievers don't hear the static crashes in Florida, they hear the static crashes at their own QTH. And all it takes for them to hear that is turning the power on. Which (not to be cruel or mean) only proves my point. Something's wrong. Whether it's an antenna situation, or improper band selection, or bad choice of operating times, is yet to be determined.
VA to GA should be a no-brainer on 40m or 75m, providing the antenna is working correctly.

Yea, agreed. #The something is my primary antenna, a somewhat directional 40m dipole just over 55 ft. with the wire oriented directly north to south and in the clear.
(broadside east to west).
I can work directly south on 15 due to its obviously spaztic radiation pattern when tuned on that band.
Thanks for the heads up on the Georgia net guys.

To be, or not to be. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the Ham to bear the slings and arrows of HF propagation, or by squelching end them. To listen perchance to hear--and by listen I mean as to a Continous Wave--a tale etched in ether for starving hamly ears...

The data is paid for by taxes, but the map overlays, gradients and presentation is wholly owned by WSI.
I don't disagree that their product isn't pretty to look at, but the Nexrad data is pretty meaningless until you process it. It's their software, if they don't want you sharing it, you don't share it.
