View Full Version : Case of the Missing Thread
Am I dreaming or did a "big" thread suddenly disappear? I've seen them locked down but hadn't seen one go completely away. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

It's no dream.
Edited to add: The thread on FUTURAMA just went MIA..??
Hi guys, what's Futurama? Speaking of thread kills, I asked moderators to kill two threads I started yesterday because some of the participants were looney tunes. What's up with all the fact challenged nimrods posting lately... full-moon or what?
It may have. Actually, I am not familiar with the thread you are referring to, but it is wholly within the power and ability of the owner and at least some moderators to make a thread "disappear" without having to get any kind of permission from the original posters or viewers of that thread.
It has been expressed over and over, and indeed is still true, that this thread is Fred's private enterprise, and if something doesn't set right with him, he has totally control to do whatever he desires.
Frankly, I am fairly surprised at some of the stuff that goes on, that he allows to be unabated !

Possibly 2 scenerios of what happened ----
1) FRED owns the site and has control of any thread and any post IN that thread. He knows which keyboard buttons to push in what order to make things disappear, should he feel a need to ( which problably aint often if at all ) .
2) Computers are known for their " glitches "...things will disappear with out any rhyme or reason, and in some cases, reappear at their disgression, later like nothing happened. This ( IMHO ) is most likely what happened. If it were me and the thread was THAT important, I would just re - type the whole thing and see what happens the second time and hope for the best.
Personally I have had about 10 of my individual posts disappear, through no fault of any one...it just happened. None of them had any " earth - shattering news " on them, and they " just disappeared ". Then there are about a even dozen that I made that I wish would / could go away, but they wont / dont. Life is like that, you make your bed then you have to lay in it....and so do the rest of you.
So, in closing, I can be sarcastic and say " get over it / grow up ", or I can be nice and say " please try again " .
With your vast knowledge, I think you will try again. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you are talking about the
KC0UWS -- VE7KFM, Please Help
thread it was removed by Fred and he said to tell anyone who asked that he just didn't like it!
As for threads "disappearing": Once-in-a-while a thread IS deleted by someone on the staff. More often a thread gets "locked down" but sometimes the thread has gotten so bad that it is decided to just go ahead and delete it.

I posted to several threads over the past two days and my posts, not the whole threads, are gone. I assume (yeah yeah, I know) there's been a glitch, as I know my posts (in these cases anyway) were not offensive. And if Fred did have them deleted, that's his right to do so without explanation.
So as I always say in cases like these: oh well.

Well there was a post last night in a thread by AB3 something I believe any way it was a picture of a signal report. It was 1AW and at the bottom it had 73's and was signed by Hiram Percy Maxium. The comment was made that 73's have been around for a long time. A couple of hours later it was gone with no trace of having been there.
73's

You mean this one? (http://www.lacrossehams.org/73s.html)
What I really like about that card is that it really relates to the old "What is proper, 73 or 73's". Now most subscribe to the 73 answer and grimace when anyone says 73's. Well I guess if it was good enuff for ole Hiram, then it's good enuff for the rest of us!!!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
An interesting thing about 73 is that some people think it relates to telegraphers in the old west, loaning their best 73 to the operator down the line -- meaning they were giving away the Winchester model 1873 as a form of protection to the next op in the wild west. The 1873 is known as the gun that won the west.
Coincidentally, speaking of firearms, Hiram's dad invented the machine gun, and Hiram invented the supressor (silencer). I wonder which of those legends of the origin of 73 is true.
Another theory is that the rhythm of 73 is so distinct in CW -- da-da-di-di-di #di-di-di-da-da -- that it was picked like "HI" di-di-di-di #di-di to signify laughter. Anybody remember any other theories?

I see that the person who posted the 1AW QSL card conveniently didn't list where the scan came from! That exact card was scanned by me on Monday 29 November 2004 at 1:35:50 PM! I posted it here on QRZ.com sometime later.

People with sewing needles hurt people. Sewing needles by themselves can't do anything.

Sometimes the sort setting changes for the topics and it makes it look like some threads have disappeared.
Mine changes itself from topic start date to last post all the time.
Exactly, the Futurama thread was moved to Ragchew but you'll always have conspiracy theories about "missing threads." Actually, this thread is more of a ragchew topic too. Remember Nixon's missing 18.5 minutes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_tapes)?

You ain't seen nuthin' until you've actually been in the thread when it disappears. Totally disorienting. Especially then all the walls vanish and you find yourself floating 60 feet up. Floating is just the first impression. Not good if you have a fear of heights like I do.
