View Full Version : Interesting - ARRL pulls MARS/Winlink News
I actually think MARS is the right service for Winlink type services.

Coincidence, I'm sure...

I agree, move all Winlink to MARS frequencies. Problem solved.

Would one of the people on here who subscribes to the League please inquire of them ?
I never get a straight answer that would encourage me to join.
Is there an independent "Army MARS" contact that someone could call for any parallel news release ?
The only item I could find is a protocol rundown:
HF Radio E-Mail Page (http://www.armymars.net/ArmyMARS/HF-Email/index.html)
If I ran ARRL, I'd pull it too. The article discusses the adoption of Winlink by Army Mars. Since the league's unpopular bandwidth petition (RM-11306) calls for Part 97 rules changes -- presumably to accomodate Winlink users -- the implications of the article are obvious.
The FCC doesn't need to accomodate Winlink in amateur radio bands in order to provide emergency communications interoperability, therefore, a huge piece of the argument for accomodation can be removed from the digital equation. Emcomms via Winlink can be accomplished very effectively by those amateurs who are affiliated with Army Mars, and the accomodation can take place on MARS frequencies, which are outside the scope and purview of Part 97.

The report seems to have originated from the MARS PR folks, and I would think that they may had second guesses about publishing it on the ARRL website.
The Homeland Security bunch are somewhat paranoid, to say the least, and my guess would be that the information about serving TSA and other agencies may have triggered a hissy fit by some "security-conscious" officials within DSH and the MARS folks asked that the report be taken down.
Just my thinking (having worked with those kinds of folks a couple score years ago).
I don't think there are any black helos behind the removal, since there is still a fervent attachment to WinLink in Newington, CT.
