I don't think it is very complicated.
A suit is a set of matching garments, traditionally fitted by a tailor. I would imagine the phrase stems from that very fact that suits are tailored. "How does that FIT you?"..."Is that tailored to your preferences?"..."This situation suits me, fits me, is tailor made for me, (insert your word of choice)....OR, it might come from the matching aspect, as in "That situation is suited to him" ...it matches him, or works harmoniously with him or his desires." etc. Or, taking it to the game of cards, a suit is a set of matching "suits"...all hearts, or all clubs etc. So again, the matching aspect also fits with something "suiting".

I must be missing something as I can't relate the question to a ham Q & A forum. Any reasonable explanation will suit me.

Well a suit has a pair of pants.
Pants legs are like round tubes.
Each leg is matched to the others operating parameters.
Much like a matched pair of PA tubes.
And a matched pair of finals suits us just fine!
