Could it be DUNG from the ISS??
SANTIAGO, Chile - Pilots of a Chilean commercial aircraft approaching the Auckland airport in New Zealand said they spotted flaming space debris falling past their jet, the LAN Chile airline reported Wednesday.
The airline said in a brief communique that the pilot, who was not identified, "made visual contact with incandescent fragments several kilometers away" on Monday.

The damage that debris could have done to the plane would have been catastrophic.
Scary stuff for sure!

Well, there's been TWO cases lately of unidentified stuff crashing into homes. Now this. WTF? Is space debris becoming an everyday danger?
Whoa.....

I was reading a Sky and Telescope snippet out of a annual I own and most of the space debris is either the US or Russian variety and most of the Russian variety is in a lower orbit than our's.
I would tend to think it's probably junk the Russians sent up years ago that has come back.

Maybe it was some of those talking urinal cakes that the Russians may have sent into orbit or perhaps some were jettisoned from a space module. Maybe they're from North Korea, or maybe...... Iran ? I think I'll go and lie down now.

It is probably the space capsule carrying the trash from the ISS, which they are due to jetason.

With all the satellites up there, the ones we know about and the ones WE DON'T, I imagine this is going to happen more and more often.

Go out any clear night and stare at the sky. In only a few minutes you'll see at least one orbiting object go overhead. Usually you'll see a few or several. And with binoculars, you'll see many more. Some are specatular. Space junk that's tumbling in orbit sends patterns of flashes that, at first glance, and freak you into thinking it's a UFO sending code! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
In fact, it's become a problem with astronomical photography. It's difficult to get a long exposure shot without getting at least one satellite trace in the pic.
Then there was this video I watched (and, unfortunately paid for...but it had some redeeming comic relief.) It was by this cat who watched hours and hours of NASA video from the shuttle. In the background, you see lights "swarming" in the sky. At first, it's kind of freaky, and you might start agreeing with the guy that this "proves" UFO's. That is, until you watch closely and notice that NONE of the "swarming lights" changes direction. What you're really seeing is tons of space junk whizzing (oops!) through the sky.
The packaging states that it's "the favorite of the astronauts." I dearly hope that somebody is kind enough to inform the producer that that's not really a compliment! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
