Ok. #Heres my situation. #I'm a new ham on a limited budget. #I bought a HTX-245 on eBay that "does not receive", thinking that maybe its just operator error. #(in my defense there is a battery saving function on this radio that shuts the receiver off for the most part.) #I got the radio today and it does receive!! #I can see signal bars when it picks up a frequency. #The problem is there is just static. #Not the good static from a signal and adjusting the volume does nothing to change it. Can anyone tell me who to talk to to see about getting this fixed? Or is it worth getting fixed? #So far I got $30 in it. #Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

for any #'audio ' problem on any radio, #check with a pair of head phones. The little # shorting jacks, dont always short #when the headphone plug is removed , so you get zero or noisy audio from the speaker.
That doesnt sound like your porblem though .But doesnt hurt to check.
a guess with out more info is , since you get #signal bars but no audio, #the weakest link in the chain there is the actual volumn control, especially since #moving it doesnt seem to change the output volumn of the crackle.
possibily it was dropped #and landed on the control, mashing it inside.
take covers off and eye ball the volumn control.
see if it looks like the back end of the control has been pushed off the shaft. or broken leads to the pc #board.
tiny #controls are likely avail able #at places like
Mouser, MCM, # Marlin P Jones, Digikey,
sounds like a DIY project to me.
its already broke so you cant make it much worse and you get experience. #and thats not that hard a job.
TIP # (for every body) when you take something #small like a HT #or #dictation recorder, etc #do it inside
a 8x10 plastic cake pan. #or if you have one with a snap on lid, do it on the lid. #
If you drop a screw #etc #they stay in the container. I also start in one corner and lay out the screws in sequence around the edge. put them back in reverse order.
Also a rule. # it it goes into plastic it will be sheetmetal type threads, if it goes into metal it will be #machine screw threads.
rule #2 .... if you ever throw #away any small japanese electronic stuff like walkmans etc, #take every screw out you can find and save it......................................

Do you still have this radio and did you ever fix it? I used to be a repair tech for Radio Shack before they started closing all of their service centers (except for the one in Fort Worth). The audio IC and a tiny chip resistor are probably burned out. That was common on that model as the speaker was small and the audio output power is in the milliwatt range. Most people had to crank up the volume all the way just to hear it in noisy places. This is not a do-it-yourself job unless you can solder surface mount components with skill.
