Anyone who's been around radio for long knows about the famous Lecher Wire instrument. It was a brilliant, straightforward means of measuring wavelength directly; I've used it in many ham radio classes to demonstrate standing waves and such. Ernst Lecher was a relatively obscure early 20th Century German physicist, who did a lot of work with X-rays, as well.

Now, Ernst Lecher's name is being used in vain, by a bunch of psychic wackos who promote the Lecher Wire as some sort of psychic dousing rod! Ernst Lecher NEVER NEVER NEVER in ANY of his writings remotely hinted that it had any such application. If you Google "Lecher Wire" you will get about 900 of these lunatic sites back. Too bad Lecher isn't still alive to sue all these morons.

Oh well....P.T. Barnum had it nailed.

Nope...they actually refer to the German Physicist Ernst Lecher.... by name...not by writings.

Oh well...maybe I need to come up with a good scam. I can always use the extra cash.

Once I lived within 1 mile of a proposed new hazmat storage facility. I went to the meetings to protest, but could not get a turn to speak because of the wackos like the lady who's pooch glows (lives near high power lines), the guy who claims to have nightmares due to a transformer in his yard, etc. These nut cases stick themselves to anything that moves like boogars to a barstool.

Where did the expression "lecherous" come from, as in, "He comitted a lecherous act." ?

Got to be some connection. Not necessarily to the German Physicist, but to someone named "Lecher" ? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Ya think ?

i'd do the same, but darn, if those newfangled frequency counters aren't really easy to use. Just hook it up to the transmitter output and "Voila!" Back to the old Lecher Wires... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Seriously, though. Lecher Wires (as I know them) were designed for a balanced feedline, (Long before coax was a gleam in most inventer's eyes.)

The origin of the word is really immaterial; most of us don't get to pick our surname. The word itself goes back to archaic roots, long before "Hannibla the Cannibal," and who knows for sure why a family adopted a particular surname. Either way, I can't help (nor should I) be responsible for any misbehaviour by an ancient ancestor.

AG3Y: Sorry; it was a word from way back when (Middle English; Old French; Germanic origin;) before it was a proper surname.

And "Hannibal the Cannibal's" surname was LecTer, not Lecher.

Now, It's just a name.

...folks keep talking about TIME TRAVEL ( to the past or the future )...well, time travel IS possible.

You sit there at your computer for one full minute.

You sat down at xx:xx:xx (hours/minutes/seconds)

You got up at xx:xx:xx (hours/minutes/seconds )

so yoou travel forward in time for the duration you just sat down.

Now going BACKWARD, I will let some one else explain that part.

you are a time traveler !! congradulations, and there was no written test involved, and you do it all the time. You are doing it right now.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif some say you can go backward in time several ways ----

1) listen to the chatter on a CB radio

2) visit certain USA states

3) visit a museum

4) visit certain elderly folks who will tell you all about the " good ol' days " !!

{ some folks will say " use CW " to go back in time , but I disagree } http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

And by telling the world, you missed out on selling a book about the topic for the amazingly low price of $29.95. (Plus $5 S/H)

You fool!

To travel BACKWARD in time....visit the town where Robert lives. Take you back at least 100 years.

Well, this answers a lot of questions for me. #I have been using a Lecher wire to check standing wave on some of my Ham applications, and every time I put power to whatever I am mesuring, the darn wire would start to bend and point in a direction, usually down. #

Well, one time I got mad and while walking to where the wire was pointing, I kicked the ground and up popped an artisian well. #Another time the darn wire pointed up to the northwest sky, and by gosh if there wasn't a rain storm coming from that direction (and if you believe this . . . .)

When I was in the Air Force in the late 40's, we had a CPX-1 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system that was used in conjunction with the long range radar sets to identify airborne targets. One of the things I remember about it is that it used Lecher Line tuning. I think that was the only system, that I can remember, that used that type of tuning during my 20 years in the Air Force working on long range radar equipment. It's the first time I've heard those words in a long time.
