It seems to me that the majority of existing ham radio logging programs are
targeting primarily to the needs of DX and contest enthusiasts. That's
fine but how about a logging system just for rag chewers especially those
who enjoy partnering ham radio with the Internet? Here is my "wish list" of
key features that I'd recommend software programmer's consider when
designing such a Windows based logging program:

-- Real time call sign look-up. This would be accomplished via a
software interface with QRZ.com. This feature would enable the operator to
simply type in the other ham's call sign which would then populate
appropriate fields in the logging software from data in the QRZ.com data
base including name, address, email address and website url. Subsequent
clicking of the website url field would open the web browser to that page.
Similarly, clicking the email address field initiates a new email message
appropriately addressed as per the email field.

-- Sound bite capture and playback capability. Provided the soundcard
input in the operator's computer is appropriately connected to the receiver,
clicking a "start sound bite" would initiate saving received audio to a
file until desired termination by clicking a "stop sound bite" button.
Similarly, clicking a "play sound bite" button would initiate play back
provided the sound card output is interfaced with the transceivers
microphone input. Alternatively, the sound bite file could be sent as an
email attachment with or without a companion "hamalyzer" program graph of
that file's audio frequency spectrum.

-- Electronic QSL card creation and transmission. Upon completion of
the qso, clicking a button marked "Generate QSL card would first generate an
electronic qsl card and then prepare it for transmission as a email
attachment.

-- Round table/net tracking utility. A simple sub-mode to the software
designed to facilitate keeping track of everyone involved in a given
discussion including name, call sign, location and comments.

-- Other usual logging program features. This program should include
the capability to type in remarks, provide antenna bearing, etc. consistent
with existing logging programs.

Do you concur conceptually and, if so, what other features would you propose
be added to the above list? Or.if you don't concur.why not?

I'd welcome your thoughts as well as an opportunity to beta test a prototype
rag chewer's logging program for any software programmer who sees merit in
the foregoing proposal.

Best wishes,

Don
