Yes Greg. In spite of what you and Eric think, most currently licensed amateurs are pretty decent fellows, and we want everyone to enjoy the privileges they wish to pursue.
There are exceptions, but like almost 16 years ago now, most hams treated this (one of the very first) no-code technician quite well. Of course, I don't think there was a QRZ available for quick bashing of your fellow hams.
In March of 1991, I began my amateur career as KD4KWT. I believe the no-code technician class was created that February. There were very few of us at that time.
Keep me up to speed on your upgrade situation if you will.
It's because I care who upgrades to general or extra.

Get an LDG tuner which plugs in to the tuner port. It's less than $200.
It will match up to 10:1 SWR and has memories to retune instantly.
I have one. It's really nice to set up a station in a pinch.

Yes, it's kind of like those guys who were comparing hams who don't take a code test to doctors that cheat on exams.
The general test, including the code, has never been as difficult as studying or learning material required to pass a single eight grade midterm test for one subject. Yet many people want to gloat, cry, whine, complain, get mad, or otherwise concern themselves emotionally about a change made to that simple test.

Greg,
Congratulations on the upgrade. I can't help out with any working hf rigs, but if you need to borrow a tuner for use at home, I have an MFJ 200 watt (949?) tuner you are welcome to borrow.
Also, I can suggest any number of inexpensive wire antennas that will get you on the air. I can furnish you with some drawings of the antennas I use here. My most useful antenna is an 80 meter dipole fed with 450 ohm ladder line which works well on all bands from 80-10. If you don't have that much room (~ 132' end to end), a 40 meter version would work well from 40-10 meters.

QRZ.com is updated from the FCC database, so it'll lag the FCC database by a few hours. For example, the upgrades and new licensees from a test session here last Saturday showed up on the the FCC database (ULS - Universal Licensing System) on Thursday evening, but didn't show up here on QRZ until afternoon on Friday.
License search is down for maintenance right now, but you'd click this to get license info straight from the FCC (http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home).

My upgrade has just shown up on the FCC data base but not on QRZ. Interesting.

Just don't dumb the test down any more. With the question pool to review anybody can pass. I think the incentive lilcensing is a pretty good carrot. Let the guys that want a little extra have it for passing Extra. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You can call them also and if they acknowledged your upgrade, you can start operating under it. The paper that comes in the mail finalizes it.

It's not a few hours, more like overnight.
I believe QRZ.com pulls the data from the FCC nightly. It's not real time.

You're good once the FCC has your upgrade in the ULS database. No need to receive a paper license. You can drop the /AE or AG as soon as it appears online.

When do you think you'll be on HF? I can work Richmond easily on 75 meters.

Not sure, I'm going to look at some hamfests to see about finding a good price on a IC-7000
