A quick search on the ULS shows 1103 license updates in the period 2/23/2007 to 2/26/2007.
A few of those are renewals and other routine matters.
On a spot check, the majority are upgrades.

It's funny you say that... the local 2m net is called by an Extra... tonight, he asked for announcements as always... another station that keeps up with those things had a couple of announcements (Young Astronaut's Day is coming up, exam session this coming weekend)... net control says "Thanks for that... any other announcements? Maybe someone has an announcement about something that happened this past weekend?"
Keep in mind that net control was on the VE team this weekend... and signed my CSCE.
Apparently, he expected me to key up with an announcement about passing some exams this weekend, because he said "ok, well, maybe he'll mention it later."
I'm proud of what I did, but I don't feel the need to trumpet it from the rooftops. And I admit to some pride over others thinking that I should announce it... that's cool.
But I'm not one to do that... I do what I do... and don't feel the need to advertise. I certainly didn't feel the need to key up with an announcement that I took a test and passed it... and no, I don't feel bad about not taking/passing a code test.
I'm just uncomfortable with recognition, I guess... I didn't do anything special.

You should be proud of your upgrade, you did take the required test. Congratulations!

Thanks... I am proud of it. I just don't think it was worthy of announcements on the 2m net http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif My comments on the net were congrats to those who passed and upgraded and to encourage anyone else who wanted to upgrade to hit the session this coming weekend.

Congratulations on your upgrade, I hope to hear you on the air.
Our local club at each meeting always asks for new licensees, upgrades and callsign changes. Eveyone who has passed a test is congratulated by the club and new licensees are welcomed. Such things are also routinely announced on the Sunday night net on the club's repeater.
You should have announced your upgrade and accepted the accolades.

We had only 6 people show up at our paper only session Feb. 24. We turned away people wanting to take tests because we thoiught there would be this onslaught of people wanting administrative upgrades.

I received congratulatory messages through my arrl.net address from several local amateurs.
Yes, life is good lately in my litte piece of paradise.
Now imagine how much sweeter it would have been to actually earn it. LOL!

Chuck is nothing more than a bitter old man who gets off constantly trying to tell people why they are below him.
Heck 99.9% of his posting are nothing but rude and snide comments about how people didn't earn their license or will never be as good as him ETC.
So keep on chucky because no one cares, we all know you’re just a bloated arrogant ass that feels he has to putt down others to make himself feel big.
And as OMV said, what have you done for ham radio aside from insult new hams?

You will find that in the real world the amateur bands are very clickish, clubish, groupish and sometimes downright rude. The promos may show this pleasant guy using perfect procedure talking to another perfect operator. But the real world is quite a different place. IF you need to prove that to yourself just listen to the HF bands on Field Day. Vulture City baby Vulture City. And all the other days are not much better on some bands.
As Darwin said, adapt adapt adapt.

Charlie, I expected that sort of reply from you. I DID earn my upgrade, thank you very much. It wouldn't make a bit of difference to you HOW I upgraded. If I passed Element 1, well, in your eyes, I would not have earned my upgrade because the question pools are public knowledge, and you KNOW I memorized every test question and answer. And if I didn't, I took my test in front of a VE, and we ALL know how crooked they all are, right? I probably slipped a Benjamin to each of them so I would be guaranteed a call. Charlie, anyone who didn't sit before an FCC proctor, pass a code test at 20 wpm, and can't build a DC to daylight rig out of parts in a junk drawer isn't a REAL HAM in your warped sense of who is and who is not an amateur.
We know your thoughts, you express them by making fun of the mentally handicapped, by slamming those who don't agree with your views, and who don't meet your standards for being an amateur radio operator.
I don't have to meet your standards. You sir, are a bitter, sorry excuse for an amateur, and your continued attacks make that clear to everyone on this forum. The Amateur's Code forbids me from telling you what I would REALLY like to tell you. But for an idea of what I am thinking, why don't you go downtown, park your butt on a parking meter and violate yourself. You'd probably derive a great deal of pleasure from the experience.
Have yourself a fine four land day.
And this response is better in which way? Practice what you preach if you are so much better....you sure think you are

Well, gang, it turns out there may, in fact, be a lot of new hams in the coming weeks... ARRL claims 60 to 70 new Technicians in some sessions, and they've gotten paperwork from 450 or more sessions since Friday, and they normally get 70 a day? Sounds like they're running about twice normal.
If there were an average of 20 in each of those sessions, that's 9000 upgrades/new licenses just through today. And that's just ARRL VEC (though they're probably the most widespread sessions).
Good to see such a huge response.

I am very active on the 3905 CC net on 40m (7.178 MHz) and also on the OMISS net (7.185 MHz) and the last week, both nets have had a lot of /AG check ins.
Before that, I believe I have worked one or two /AG or /AE in a total of some 26,000 QSO. So, the code drop certainly added a lot of new faces. I do hope they will discover the virtues of CW some day, now that they are not forced to learn it. It is, after all, a much more robust mode of communication.
