Think used gear prices will increase with the huge demand posed by all the new ex-NCT's that got the upgrade?

All insults aside, I would guess that most of the folks who were TECHNICIANS and have upgraded to GENERAL or EXTRA are spending their money on fairly new HF radios, and that very very few are getting a rig that doesnt at least have digital readout. I would guess also that most of these same folks are BUYING their first outside base HF antenna, and plan to experiment with di-poles later on in the months / years ahead.

But below my post will undoubtably be some one who disagrees...and that is ok ( & expected )....so...post it.

Sounds reasonable to me...I heard some gossip that gear was already showing higher prices on eScam.
Heck, gear always seems to have higher then realistic prices on there on a good day...hi. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I have a pair of FT-101s... and a wire antenna. Nothing expensive/showy here.

Absolutely. if you haven't watched ebay, the price for a 706mkiig has gone from 650-750 average to 750-900 in the past 30 days. Put it up "buy it now" at 700 and it's literally gone in five minutes.

Rig prices are skyrocketing. Even 735's are going for 400 bucks.

Quote[/b] ]eScam.

Why do people do this? Ebay is no more or less legit than a hamfest and you don't hear people whining about 'scamfests'.

like so many things, ebay requires a bit of thought before bidding/selling (you know, read the seller's feedback carefully, read the listing carefully, ...), and not many people are used to doing that.

I agree. If you go to a hamfest throwing money around and buying things without checking them out, you'll get taken. If you do it on EBay, same same. You CAN get scammed on EBay, but you can scammed at your local 7-11 too.
I've gotten some VERY good deals on EBay. I got ripped off once in 200+ transactions and that was for less than $20 AND I didn't look at the seller's feedback before bidding.
If you are getting ripped off a LOT on ebay, maybe the problem is with you and not EBay. EBay is just like a big old parking lot where people are having a swapfest. It's up to YOU to decide where you spend your money and whether you should deal with a seller, not the guy that owns the parking lot.

That is where being around a bit longer conflicts with your info. At a hamfest, I can touch, look at, talk with the seller one on one. Sure, I may end up with a junker, but I usually have a better chance getting back to the guy vs. over the internet.

Ebay, or Flea Bay, can list whatever they want, and when you get it, it looks different, interior is damaged, etc. You only get what you can see from a photo and the scammers that do this, don't care. They change user names on EBay and go on under an alternate ID.

I have been stiffed on Ebay a few times more then I like.

I would gladly take a hamfest anyday over sight unseen.

yes, prices do seem to be "up" . it's the AMERICAN way, basic supply and demand. nothing wrong with that (IMO). things will settle out as time goes by and the prices should come down a bit.
as far as e-bay, well, just do your homework. i have made some purchases there. mostly small items.
there is another major ham (only) site that i much prefer to sell and purchase on.

I'm in the market for a bunch of Drake 7-line accessories and will gladly go to a hamfest so I can look at them...touch them...talk with the seller. The problem is that no one is bringing any to the 'fests.

Quote[/b] ]Sure, I may end up with a junker, but I usually have a better chance getting back to the guy vs. over the internet.

That might have been the case 20 years ago but is certainly not the case in present day. Exceptions: Everyone at your local event knows each other and sells within their 'circle'. I can almost guarantee you'll not get a refund from a shady vendor you happened upon at, say, Dayton or Shelby - unless you know them personally.

Quote[/b] ]Ebay, or Flea Bay, can list whatever they want, and when you get it, it looks different, interior is damaged, etc.

Hint: There are NO 'New in box! Mint! Never used; works perfectly!' 20-year-old rigs floating around. Steer clear of anyone offering such because they don't exist. On the other hand - if a seller's description of an item doesn't appear way off base - all things considered - it's probably a safe bet. Especially if the seller's feedback rating is very high.

There are a few eBay crooks in existence and they are documented fairly well throughout the various newsgroups and amateur-radio forums. When in doubt, Google is your friend...

The first key to eBay success is to be an intelligent, informed consumer. Apply this rule:

If a deal looks to good to be true, it usually is. Especially true where high-end, late-model equipment is being offered for a ridiculously low 'Buy It Now' price by persons with zero or low feedback numbers.

Quote[/b] ]I have been stiffed on Ebay a few times more then I like.

And I've gotten hundreds of excellent deals there, but you have to know what you're after when you're going in. Be willing to spend absolutely no more than the item in question is worth to you - or that you can afford to lose. Further, I refuse to buy anything advertised as '100% Mint!' unless it's brand-new (in the box; with OEM warranty) from an online dealer.

Perhaps I would too, but (again) no one is bringing the gear which I'm interested in to our regional hamfests. With the price of gasoline hovering around the $2.50/gal mark, I for one am not going to burn endless hundreds of dollars of refined dinosaur in search of a piece of gear that may never turn up. Not when I can get the stuff online fairly easily...

Yes prices are increasing, and people would be silly not to hike prices. This will be the last big sales horrah for awhile in AR. Once we're passed the bump, I bet at least Kenwood will be out of the Ham business soon thereafter.

I stand by what I said about hamfests. There are scammers everywhere today and I prefer a one on one contact with a seller. I may still get stiffed, but the chances are far greater with sight unseen over the internet to be sure.

Many sellers use a picture from another source and don't use the actual picture of their item in the advertisement.

Sometimes, if I don't have a digital camera present, I tell individuals as such and may provide a picture of what the item is but note it isn't the actual item being listed. I am up front with any and all potential buyers.

Let's face it. We have scammers in the hobby, as well as off the ther internet auction sites. You just have to be careful.

To date, I haven't bought that much at hamfest but to date, haven't had a junker once. That isn't the case with EBay or off the net.
