View Full Version : Is it just me

I don't know is this is a local phenomenon or if it is wide spread but here goes.

The first time I noticed this was about 3 months ago when my neighbor had a visitor - this guy was driving a dually pick up truck and tack welded to his bumper hitch were two short chains with two very large hex nuts attached to the other ends. #Well the implication was obvious and I thought that the guy was either very immature, very insecure or just lacking good taste. #

Now it seems that about one out of every ten or so pickup trucks (usually an F-150) have some variation on this - today I actually observed one in which two large round objects that were placed in a leather sack and hung from the rear bumper. #

I'm not impressed - somehow having to simulate genitalia attached to a pickup truck doesn't seem to be very macho in my opinion. #I gotta wonder who they're trying to impress the most, women, men or themselves.

But that's me - you may feel differently.

It's not silly but vulgar, IMHO. It's also a simple mathematical relationship: machismo is inversely proportional to intelligence.

With every other vehicle here a pick-up truck or an SUV on steroids, my equation is sound.

Don't fall over dead, but I agree with you, Mike.

This kind of stuff is extremely lame. We have variations on that theme out here on the West Coast. It's usually done by some wannabe redneck in a sparkling clean 4X4 with a "cowboy up" sticker on the rear window...

Funny you mention "compensate", Eric.

My daughter refers to any large SUV as a "Ford Compensator"... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

You see that alot here in Hampton Roads, but I believe that also has to do with the large number of military members.

I was at the Lynnhaven Mall the other day with my 12 year old daughter. While we were walking to Dick's Sporting Goods (Hmmm the name and type of store.. coincidence? Innuendo?) and there in the parking lot was a full size pickup with a vanity plate saying "GOT BALZ" and right underneath were these rather large very realistic blue plastic testes.

I love the phrase Dave's daughter uses... the "Ford Compensator"!!

Once again, we here in the hinterlands are behind the times! I haven't seen this here, but that just means that the kind of guys who would do this haven't heard of it yet. Silly.

I have never seen that, but if it is infesting the lower-48 I am sure it will show up here sooner or later. Personally I am tired of seeing the stickers of the little boy peeing on some brand name.

The most offensive bumper sticker I used to see on teen-aged boys' vehicles was a bumper sticker that said "No Fat Chicks". It is a particularly cruel and asinine sticker that bespeaks the stupidity of the owner, but I haven't seen one of those for quite a while now.

I started a thread on this very subject about a year ago.

If we lived in an all male world, I might think it is cute, but we don't...and I don't appreciate the fact that many 11,12,13 year old girls and even young boys are exposed to such vulgarity and there is nothing we can do about it shy of locking them in their rooms and shutting them off from the outside world.

I'm also sick of the vulgar music...its pretty bad when your 6 year old son recognizes the lyrics to "Junk in the Trunk"

This must be a southern and western US thing.
I have not seen it here in SW Pennsylvania.
But if it is becoming common elsewhere, it will get here soon enough.

The truck testies thing has been here in the middle of the country for at the least five years. First pair I saw were hanging under what must have been the most dilapidated Chevy Luv I’ve ever seen.

I think they may have been applied to that rust bucket just for moral support. The truck needed all the help it could get.

As it happens I kinda like the propeller thing. When I put the receiver hitch on my Neon my wife and kid bought me one to put in the receiver socket when I wasn’t towing something.

I get a lot of comments about just how well it propels my little car in the river.

This kind of thing evolved from devices that discharge static electricity. Old vehicles has tires that were good insulators and as they rode the car or truck bodies could develop highly charged static voltages which the driver often felt upon getting out of the vehicles. Static electricity could also be dangerous when fueling up at a gas pump. Modern tires contain enough carbon in their rubber to prevent static build up...but some truckers still believed that discharge straps or chains are needed and some put them on their trucks because others do and think it will bring good luck.

w2ilp (Ignoring Limited Potential)...because my tires discharge mine.

Hello.

This applies ONLY to big (class 8) trucks.
Part of the process that makes a big truck tire both regroovable and retreadable is the carcass.
This is made with a boundary layer, somewhat like a whitewall, but not in white.
The trouble is that the boundary layer is made of a much softer rubber, no carbon black, and thus an excellent insulator.
But, getting back to whitewalls.
Whitewalls of the old style were also made with a full wrap around boundary layer, but of a white rubber, and thus no carbon black.
And, why grandpa had the little anti-static straps.
Sometimes it pays to watch the history channel.
