An excellent example of how the LEFT stifles free speech in our universities.

Same thing happens here on this site. Columbia U is the east coast equivalent of Berkley on the west coast.

First of all the article leaves a few important things out. They fail to mention that Gildcrist was representing an anti-immigrant xenophobic hate group which quite naturally is going to rile up the feelings and emotions of many students, particularly immigrant student groups who were represented in Gildcrists audience.. Secondly, the article gives the impression that Gildcrist was physically assaulted by the students which he wasn't. While it is true that his little hate speech was interrupted he certainly was not physically assaulted. If he were then it would not be a Universtity-only issue. Charges would have been pressed with the NYPD and individual lawsuits would have been filed. Next the article tries to draw a parallel between the philosophy of the revolting students and the university itself. That is completely absurd. Columbia has an enormous student body. To try and claim that any single group of students represents Columbia University policies is completely ludicrous and idiotic. Lastly, since the issue is a University disciplinary issue Columbia is in no way, shape or form obligated to make any disciplinary action public. There are many reasons for this including legal ones. Nor is such a policy unique to Columbia. Most universities, colleges, corporations, employers, etc. maintain privacy over such internal issues. There is nothing new or surprising about such policies.

This article is either written by someone with disdain for Columbia, perhaps he didn't get accepted for admission or, someone who is totally clueless.

Yeah, both excellent schools.
Both excellent recruiting grounds for socialist groups you mean.

Check out that site. Berkley is a fine school if you are a socialist.

Says you. They didn't fail to mention anything.
Now that your done vilifying a group you don't like why don't you try sticking to the subject. Everybody who came to that speech knew exactly who Mr. Gilcrest represented.

People like you will stand on the corner and scream "free speech" when it comes to burning the flag or depicting or displaying the crucifix in a jar of urine but physically attacking somone who's speech is just fine with you. If those are the new rules then I suggest all the flag burning degenrates run for the hills.

Contrary to video tape evidence. Admit it, you got caught supporting a bunch of closed minded thugs.

It was a protest and the protesters walked on stage. They were attacked by the racist minuteman goons.

http://cryptome.org/cu-mm-protest.htm

Even your beloved george bush called the minutemen vigilantes.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/03/20050323-5.html

The university didn't punish the protesters because they knew that it would backfire. You should be thankful that most university administrations are filled with fairly conservative people.

You ought not be surprised, however, that when you try to bring your right wing racist hate speech to universities that the student population will protest.
