View Full Version : Attention New To HF!

Okay, so the FCC finally let you on HF.
So you spin the VFO looking for signals to use your new /AG or /AE. You stop on an obvious QSO, you drop your call, you have no signal, so the traffic stops and asks you your call. You then tell them you do not have to ID until the end of your QSO. <sigh>
Do you walk into a room un-announced, start to interupt peoples conversation and when the ask you who you are, you tell them you don't have to for ten minutes? Act on air as if the persons are right in front of you.
It's all about respect. The people you are trying to engage conversation with have been there for some time. Remember when you first got on your local repeater? Didn't go as planned, did it? Always identify when asked, you are in the big league now.
Some of the hot spots on the bands are guys with huge yagis or wires, legal limit amps, booming audio and probably a top of the line radio with DSP. Chances are while they are 20 over 9 to you, they might not even be able to hear you.
Yes, you can use a 5 watt QRP rig and a piece of wet string to work China under the right circumstances, but that is also in a quiet area of the band with propagation. Not some crowded portion of 75 on a busy weekend night.
I received the code elimination with mixed emotions. While I have been around radio for years and always wanted to get on HF and work the world, I have been quietly doing half that on VHF, a place I thought I would never like. #Now it's like home to me, with the exception of a few groups on 20, 75 and 160.
All the bands are a buzz with phrases like: "Who's the stroke AG ?" I have not added to the crowding, choosing to listen and see how this is going to play out. I mean how do you feel when you work hard at work, and a newer co-worker is given a free ride to your department or status?
Now, I know that CW is the ONLY mode that will cut through QRM and QRN or marginal propagation. Code will NOT be lost or never used again, by contestors and DXers alike. Just because it has been eliminated by the FCC in testing, doesn't mean HAM radio will leave it behind.

If you want your message to be taken seriously or even remotely considered, you shouldn’t insult your target audience in your opening sentence.
The insults could have been slipped in later on in your posting and would have been ok, but when the first thing they see is the “free ride to HF" comment they can pretty much guess that nothing intelligent is likely to follow.

The call is the one I wanted if I upgraded. It's taken.
Until I see something else I like, I'll stick with what I have.
No, I have not upgraded, nor have I been trolling HF since the deletion of morse code.......

Looks like there is a wee bit of corruption in the QRZ database.
The WZ9J call is issued to a gentleman in Michigan with an oriental sounding name.
Record must have been corrupted upon transfer from the ULS original.
Doo-Doo happens.

I have some more thoughts and comments about the original post, but seeings that I am not usually a troublemaker,
I'll keep them to myself.
One less thread Tom, Dave, Terry ( I know I'm forgetting several others) has to lock down.

You can post what ever previous call sign you want. It does not come from QRZ or the FCC.

Technically, it means Authorized General, at least that's what they claimed in an ARRL book I read. But they could be wrong.
Didn't know you could arbitrarily audit the "previous callsign" field in QRZ.

ARRL wrong? You can't be serious. ARRL is the steady hand of ham radio. They say I need winlink and d-star so I'm saving up. They've already saved ham radio so it's the least I can do, right?
Next they'll want me to join too!

Yeah, that is weird -- listing as previous call sign on QRZ one that was never held. Something wrong in the woodpile here.
hmmm.
I am floored! I actually agreed with FOG! Lordy, first thing you know I'll agree with Marty AE6IP on a second issue. Agreed with him once a year or so ago.
I gotta be careful. Must be going soft in my old age! Agreeing with FOG? But yes, that was hardly a way to start a posting and gain any positive attention. Got lots of negative attention, which is OK, too, I guess.
I gotta fix my attitude. Can't be agreeing with FOG and AE6IP anymore this year. Gonna have to wait until 2008.

I am not sure this is correct, although I may be proven wrong. The ARRL FCC Rule Book merely indicates that /AG is simply a temporary identifier for an upgraded license not yet processed in the database. 13th edition, p. 6-12.

Someone look on the back of their CSCE.
Upon recollection, I THINK that is where I may have seen that reference.
I just can NOT be certain.
Doesn't matter anyway. Everyone gets the jist of the reference.

WZJ if that was through the Indy Radio Club ... I guarantee you it was not as you had it first stated, A/G, as your CSCE and regs state, and has been stated, it is /AG, /AE ..

Just my thoughts on something ... relating to advice ... many giving "advice" in different threads may have noble intentions, but it's my opinion that it's better to wait until someone asks you for it.

Chris,
The league may be wrong about a plethora of items on their agenda, but I have not seen anyone come forth with a developed plan to organize and finance an alternative to the ARRL.
When someone developes such a plan, I, and I expect MANY others will take a hard look at the proposal.
Until that time, they are all we have.
Good, bad or indifferent, they are IT.
The only other alternative that I have ever heard about, was that group that Baxter had CLAIMED to form in Maine.
And, you see how that one turned out.

Did you look up the persons call sign after they gave it too you? I know last night there where a few operators causing harmful interference and calling themselves /ag /ae and operating poorly. when looked up on QRZ all calls turned up bogus. Very mature of the older operators don't ya think?

They gotta do *something* to make everybody believe that no-code is the end of ham radio.
My personal favorite is still the moron who was gonna give us all a "radio butt whoopin'."
I heard some idiot keying up on top of a QSO tonight and just blowing into the microphone. Of course he never IDed, so we'll never know who that fine tribute to ham radio was.

For some of the amateurs who are supposed to be the 'elder statesmen" of the amateur service, they sure are acting like six year old spoiled brats.
Too bad we can't find the offenders, turn them over our knee, and give them a 'radio butt whoopin' with a Wouff Hong!

Had we been able to do that, there would be a whole bunch of NCGs still NCTs with sore hineys rather than a whole crop of welfare Generals.

I never look up calls unless the op on the other end acts like an ass, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with his/her output, or I want a card from them.
For all I know, I have may worked a BUNCH of invalid calls.
