Dog fighting, horse racing, unless the rider would like to trade places with the horse, etc.............
By the article's title I thought they were talking about _real_ men.

I see from the link the removal of the practice has nothing to do with the well being of the animals. Instead, a political move to make a politician look better.
Sick sport indeed. Cockfighting is too.

They have had issues down here with teenagers staging "fight clubs" in remote wooded areas, etc.

Hello.
Yes, this is primarily a "Mexican" thing.
There are cockfights in almost all Mexican border towns.
So, in the end, we will have this as an underground sport in the US and as something to cross the border for.
It will not stop it, any more in NM than in Texas.
In Houston cockfights go on every other weekend.
In San Antonio every weekend.

Does Louisiana still have it?
I remember it being popular in the TV movie ROOTS. No Mexicans in that one.
Quote[/b] (kc7jty @ Feb. 08 2007,10:32)]Does Louisiana still have it?
Yes, unfortunately.
If New Mexico outlaws it, which they probably will, that will make Louisiana the last state to condone this so-called "sport."
Every year some state legislator introduces a bill to outlaw cockfighting in Louisiana and the bill either never makes it to a vote or, if it does, it gets voted down.
Most of the arguments for keeping the practice legal boil down to, "But we've had it for a long time so it would be unfair to outlaw it now." #When pressed, the arguments revert to, "But it's part of our culture!"
Yeah, right.

I find the degree of empathey for a few chickens quite ironic indeed in a country where poverty, homelessness and hunger should not exsist at all. Much less in ALL states as opposed to a couple of backwater venues known only for such things as cockfighting and UFOs! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

If you eat meat, you ought to be required, at least once in your life, to kill the live animal before cooking the carcass.

Especially these days with all the additional potholes, subsidence, and flood damage to the roads that probably won't get fixed for another decade or so.
I notice that most of the people who speed on Louisiana roads these days have out-of-state plates, too.

Hello.
I10, Orange Texas crossing the bridge is something a sleeping passenger would know about.
This goes on right up to Mississippi.
I20 is a bit better.
But, the question remains, how do they manage to get all the bumps in the concrete?
Nobody else seems to be able to get this down.
Special Cajun formula concrete mix perhaps?

Louisiana's high water table is the main reason, combined with temperature extremes. #Makes it very difficult to build and maintain roads. #The hurricanes of August, 2005, didn't help, either.

Florida has a high water table and temperature extremes, and the roads here are in great shape. I think the problem that Louisiana has with its roads is when all the political kickbacks and contract padding is taken into account, there is little money left to actually build and maintain the roads!
BTW, Mississippi got hammered a lot harder than Louisiana during Katrina. The floods after Katrina were a direct result of poor maintenance and shoddy construction of the flood control system, not the storm itself.

No argument there. #Money that should have gone into road maintenance got spent (read: stolen) elsewhere.
Quote[/b] ]BTW, Mississippi got hammered a lot harder than Louisiana during Katrina. The floods after Katrina were a direct result of poor maintenance and shoddy construction of the flood control system, not the storm itself.
Again, no argument. #The design was marginal to begin with and there was little effective maintenance and upgrading over the years. #Most inspections done by the Levee Boards (state agencies tasked with maintenance of the flood protection system) were of the "drive-by" type: drive by and see if the levee is still there. #I can't ever remember seeing a crew taking soil borings or subsidence measurements.
Levees, like any man-made earthwork, is not set-and-forget; it takes constant maintanance. #But the money for that purpose got misspent on things like building an elevated roadway to provide access to a casino boat (the boat itself didn't survive Katrina; the roadway is still there).
If you want to blame any one cause for the failure of the levee system, it is political corruption.
Quote[/b] ]When are all the hurricane refugees gonna move their butts back home and get the #### outta LaFayette?
That's what the people in Lafayette would like to know, too. #The problem is that the people you most want to return aren't returning; they relocated to new jobs and new lives elsewhere. #A sizeable portion of what has returned is responsible for the huge crime problem the city faces right now.

Hello.
Now that payments have stopped for most refugees, crime has gone up.
In Texas, an innovative solution.
When a person is arrested, an NCIC check is done.
This gives an overall view of the persons criminal history.
Now, if a person is from the big easy, based totally on criminal history, the question is, did this person commit a crime that would otherwise have not occured if this person were not here, very careful legal language is used.
If the answer is yes, the preferred option is voluntary relocation.
There is a fund established to help get these people back home.
This is almost always an airline ticket.
The cost of an airline ticket is around $200,.
The cost of one week in jail is around $200.

You laugh, but you're not the one with the screwed up rim and the tire that went flat because of that pothole. I'm pretty good at dodging the bad ones. This is the first one that did damage.
As for cockfighting, who cares? I've never been to one. They sound boring. Still if a guy wants to risk a bird that he owns, let him have at it. Animal rights are a joke. People get these ideas from personifying animals They begin to believe it has emotions and feelings. How someone could believe any bird has emotions is beyond my understanding.
Spoiler warning: your dog doesn't love you. He's excited to see you because you're the one with the food.

I'm serious and you're trying to avoid direct discussion of the issue by suggesting anyone who disagrees with you does so because their upbringing was somehow inadequate. That's poor form. Try to stick to the issue, which is whether or not this form of entertainment should be illegal.

I have to say I completely disagree with your thought that your dog only wags his tail because you give food. Before you think I am some PETA freak, know I run a small meat goat farm, so I raise animals to send them to thier death so to speak. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
But to think they have no emotions is silly. They may have them on a different level but they are there. I take special care to ensure my animals are comfortable and happy and they get a fair amount of human interaction. My breeders are very well treated and all have VERY distinct personal traits. They can be happy, sad, goofy, grumpy and everything else. If they were little animal machines with no emotions they would not be this way. They would eat/sleep/poop/breed etc so long as I simply provided the conditions they need to survive. Funny thing is, the more time we spend making sure they have things to play with and stimulate them, ensure the herd is stable so they don't miss herdmates, the better they produce.
We also have livestock guardian dogs. They have little human interaction compared to the house dogs. They never really see us put food in the bowls they eat out of, but they still wag tails and lick faces when we go out into the pasture. Explain that??
As far as if animal fighting should be legal. No. People are creating an artificial situation that is designed to play on the animals instincts so that it will fight. The drive to fight may be instinctive, but the pain after and during the fight is also very real. My goats indeed are raised to be killed, it does NOT mean we go ahead and torture them for our amusement until such time as we dispatch them for meat. I have to wonder how many animals you have seen with terrible injuries suffer till they died or had to be put down. Its not a fun thing (we have free range chickens and with foxes, coyotes, o'possums and racoons we have to deal with this fairly often) to deal with. Would you just leave it lay there to die over several days?

All SPORT that involves animal cruelty should be banned. Including Dog, bull, #### fighting . and bow hunting. If an animal is to be killed it should be done quickly and humanely.
